SUNRISE ROTARY SUPPORTS CELAYA NAT-THA-HI GLOBAL GRANT
The Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise is pleased to be a partner for the Global Grant to purchase a microscope for the Beatriz Velazco de Aleman Clinic in Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico. The grant will establish an ongoing program of cataract surgeries. Untreated cataracts can lead to severe disabilities and blindness.
The global grant in the amount of $41,250 USD includes the purchase of a surgical microscope, lens kits, and medicines. The Rotary Club of Celaya Nat-Tha-Hi is the originator of the grant with funding from the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise, Rotary Club of Santa Maria Breakfast, Rotary Club of E One World, and Districts 5240 and 4140. A date for the cataract
surgeries will be determined by the local doctors soon. There will be 80 surgeries conducted.
LuzMaria Ortiz reports, “PDG Rosita Acevedo and the Celaya Nat-Ha-Hi Rotarians send their appreciation and thank our club for funding the project.”

2017 ROTARY NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS
The New Year is a good time to reflect on the changes we want or need to make. Here are some suggestions for ways to make our club better and your experience as a Rotarian richer.
Attend our weekly meetings – Great speakers, fellowship and networking all happen at our weekly meetings.
Do a make-up – Life can get crazy and so you can't always attend meetings. Stay involved by coming to one of the many fun social activities Diana organizes or visit another Rotary club.
Invite a new member – Bring a guest to Rotary and invite them to be a member. Who do you think would make a great Rotarian?
Get social - Share our club's Facebook posts or post your own. Brag about what we're doing on social media!
Wear your Rotary pin – Be proud. It is also a great tool to start a conversation about the good work Rotary does and about membership.
Get involved in hands-on Rotary projects – Volunteering is vital to Rotary. Dental clinic, Camp Whittier, SB City Kitchen Garden, Career Exploration Elective are just a few of the current and upcoming volunteer opportunities!
Participate on a committee – Membership, Community Service, International Service, and Fundraising Committees are all looking for new members and great ideas!
Contribute to the TRF Annual Fund and the club’s foundation – And if you have already given, please consider giving a little more.

Do you have a great shot from a club project or fundraiser? Did you capture a memorable moment at the convention or during an international trip?
Enter your images in The Rotarian's 2017 photo contest and you might see them in the pages of the magazine. You may enter up to three photos taken since January 1, 2016. To enter, you must be a Rotarian, honorary Rotarian, or a participant or alumnus of an official Rotary program. Spouses or children of Rotarians are also allowed to enter. Deadline is February 15, 2017.
Free for District 5240 Rotarians, Rotaractors, and Interactors and their guests.
Join us at STEPS, where Rotarians from across the district and other nonprofit partners will meet and share projects for "doing good in the world." This year, STEPS will highlight the global concern for human trafficking by increasing awareness and describing ways for Rotary clubs to take action by supporting projects, programs and campaigns to help protect children and adults from human trafficking.
From time to time Rotarians may read the promotional literature announcing a presidential or regional peace conference to be held some place in the world. Such a conference is quite similar to the annual Rotary International convention but generally smaller in attendance and serving Rotarians and guests in a region that is a considerable distance from the site of the international convention.
The purpose of an RI presidential or peace conference is to develop and promote acquaintance, friendship and understanding among the attendee as well as to provide a forum to discuss and exchange ideas about Rotary and international affairs related to humanitarian service and activities to promote goodwill and understanding. Some peace conferences are sponsored by districts with support from The Rotary Foundation. Presidential conferences usually attract two or three thousand individuals, and, because they are considered special events in the Rotary calendar, are not held on any regular schedule. The conferences are arranged by a committee appointed by the RI president.
Rotarians from all parts of the world are always welcome to attend. Participating in a peace conference in another region is an enjoyable, rewarding and fascinating experience. It provides another facet to the international fellowship of Rotary.
This is one of a series of short articles about Rotary written by Cliff Dochterman, PRIP, and originally published in the Rotary publication, The ABCs of Rotary.

ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE - Week 29
The STEPS Conference is just under two weeks away so I pulled out this pin from the 2012 STEPS Conference. The conference includes interesting and inspiring speakers and projects on steps to eliminate poverty sustainably. I hope this encourages you to register. It's on Saturday, January 28 at Cal Lutheran.
I have challenged myself to wear my Rotary pin EVERY day. By doing this I hope to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary's work. I invite all Sunrise Rotarians to join me in wearing a Rotary pin EVERY day.
