With summer at an end and the autumn season upon us, we celebrate Education and Literacy Monthin September. Our commitment of time, talent, and treasure serves the educational needs of many youth in our local community. I would like to highlight four of these programs.
Our Dictionary Project is headed up this year by Dennis Johns. The dictionaries, paid for by your direct financial contributions and made available through a District Grant will provide underprivileged 3rd graders in Santa Barbara with what may be the first book they own! It will be a resource they will turn to again and again to help them learn.
Sunrisers enjoyed some tasty brews and the company of four past Presidents at Figueroa Mountain Brewing Company last week. Past Presidents David Velarde, Dennis Johns, Janet Napier, and Gary Jensen dispensed wise advice and great stories to all who attended.

PRACTICAL RELEVANT LEADERSHIP SKILLS (PRLS)
PRLS stands for Practical Relevant Leadership Skills and is a program of District 5240.
The goal of PRLS, begun in 1993, is to provide a set of training sessions wherein current and future Rotary leaders could learn to become more effective in their leadership roles.
Introduction to Rotary (formerly Basic PRLS) consists of a 2-hour session on Rotary Then and Now and overview of Master PRLS series. This program was specifically developed to train individuals whose goals include a future leadership position in Rotary.
The next Introduction to Rotary sessions are scheduled for September 10 (Bakersfield) and October 3 (Ventura). Introduction to Rotary is a prerequisite to the Master PRLS series.

DID YOU KNOW?
The number 711 has a very special significance for Rotary. Room 711 of the old Unity Building, formerly located at 127 North Dearborn Street in downtown Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A., was the birthplace of Rotary International. That historic room, which was the office of engineer Gus Loehr, was the location of that first meeting when Paul Harris met with several friends to discuss his new idea of a club for professionals and businessmen.
It took extensive research and dedication by a few Chicago Rotarians to preserve the room and restore it to its 1905 authenticity. For years, Room 711 was preserved as a miniature Rotary museum by Rotarians around the world who voluntarily belonged to and contributed annually to the "Paul Harris 711 Club," which provided funds for leasing, maintenance and preservation. In 1989, the Unity Building was about to be torn down. Members of the 711 Club carefully dismantled the landmark room and placed its contents in storage. There it stayed until 1994, when the recreated Room 711 found a permanent home, and this piece of the Rotary heritage is preserved at the RI World Headquarters in Evanston.
This is one of a series of short articles about Rotary written by Cliff Dochterman, PRIP, and originally published in the Rotary publication, The ABCs of Rotary.
ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE - Week 10
PRLS is terrific training program founded by our District. PRLS stands for Practical Relevant Leadership Skills and while it is a leadership training program, it is a also great opportunity to connect with District leaders and other motivated Rotarians who are committed to making a difference in their communities and the world.
I earned by PRLS pin back in 2000, or maybe it was 2001, it was so long ago I don’t remember. Back then it was called Basic PRLS (it used to stand for Potential Rotary Leaders Seminars) and was a half-day seminar taught by four District leaders. I took the course again two years ago and it is now a 2-hour session called Introduction to Rotary. Both times I recall thinking how fortunate I am to have excellent training programs like this for Rotary members.
I have challenged myself to wear my Rotary pin EVERY day. By doing this I hope to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary's work. I invite all Sunrise Rotarians to join me in wearing a Rotary pin EVERY day.
By Karen Kawaguchi, Club Service Director
