The Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise awards Brian Borgatello, an 11th grade student at Bishop Diego High School, with a scholarship to attend theRotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA). Brian was recommended by his school counselor and chosen from several applicants for the 2017 leadership camp held in Ojai on April 21-23.
Brian’s activities at Bishop include soccer, volleyball, ASB team, and serving as a student ambassador by welcoming new students and giving tours to prospective students. He also volunteers for Direct Relief, a nonprofit organization that provides food and medical supplies for people affected by poverty or natural disasters. When asked why he would like to attend RYLA, Brian writes, “I would like to attend RYLA this April to further develop my leadership skills by talking to peers about their ways of leading.”
Brian will join Blessed Emurese, our club’s Rotary Youth Exchange Student, representing Santa Barbara Sunrise at RYLA.

GOODBYE, NANCY!
We bid a fond farewell to Nancy Woods who is moving out of the area. In her one-year as a Sunrise Rotarian, Nancy jumped in with both feet! She quickly got involved on the Vacation Raffle committee, Membership committee, lead our public relations efforts, attended the District Conference, and participated in Rotary PRLS training.
Nancy is in the process of completing the sale of her home in Santa Barbara. In the coming weeks, she will be packing and moving to Vancouver, Washington. Nancy plans to join a Rotary club in Vancouver once she gets settled.
We will miss our knitting Rotarian and wish her the best in her new community!

Thank you, Steve, for coordinating our outing at Zodo's and to everyone who played, cheered, sipped, and snacked!

DID YOU KNOW?
One of the most popular and rewarding programs of The Rotary Foundation is Group Study Exchange. Since the first exchange between districts in California and Japan in 1965, the program has provided educational experiences for about 35,000 business and professional men and women who have served on about 6,500 teams. The GSE program pairs Rotary districts to send and receive study teams.
One of the attractive features of GSE is the opportunity for the visiting team members to meet, talk and live with Rotarians and their families in a warm spirit of friendship and hospitality.
In addition to learning about another country through visits to farms, schools, industrial plants, professional offices and governmental establishments, the GSE teams serve as ambassadors of goodwill. They interpret their home nation to host Rotarians and others in the communities they visit. In recent years, teams of a single vocation or cultural group have been exchanged.
Update: Group Study Exchange is no longer a program of The Rotary Foundation. Clubs and Districts are transitioning to a Vocational Training Team (VTT) format.
This is one of a series of short articles about Rotary written by Cliff Dochterman, PRIP, and originally published in the Rotary publication, The ABCs of Rotary.

ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE - Week 42
Happy Easter! I hope everyone enjoyed the candy, your friends and family, and all the meaning that this special day includes. I am feeling blessed this Easter, partially because of what my fellow club members mean to me. My Rotary Easter basket is full.
I have challenged myself to wear my Rotary pin EVERY day. By doing this I hope to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary's work. I invite all Sunrise Rotarians to join me in wearing a Rotary pin EVERY day.

CLUB MEETING NOTES - Apr 12, 2017
We were joined by Visiting Rotarians, Andy Brock (Rotaract President, Santa Barbara) and Wade Nomura, PDG (Rotary Carpinteria Morning), and guests Patricia Acimiega and Molly Morrison.
President Chris announced that today is the 62nd anniversary of the reported success of Dr. Salk's polio vaccine. There are only 5 cases of wild polio virus reported to date in the world this year.
President Chris recognized Nancy W. on her 1-year anniversary in Rotary and shared the news today's meeting will be her last. She is moving to Vancouver.

President Chris reported on the recent meeting of the Group 8 committee. The Group 8 Presidents Elect voted not to fund a float for the upcoming Fiesta Parade in August. There may be some other type of parade entry. The balance on the special use account is $1,485.82. This may be used to support local Interact activities and promote awareness of Rotary in our community.
Connard shared his idea to fundraise for the club foundation while hiking the Pacific Coast Trail. He will need a club member to help spearhead the fundraising effort.
