The Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise partnered with the Rotary Club of Nat-Tha-Hi in Celaya, Mexico on a Rotary Global Grant for the purchase of a new microscope and lens kits for cataract surgeries. A surgical clinic was held on March 31 and April 3, 2017. 80 patients received sight restoring surgeries over the four-day period.
Volunteer Rotarians performed various activities such as check-in patients, visit with families of patients, assist nursing staff with supplies and pre-operative preparations, and assist surgical staff with patients. Additionally, volunteers joined with medical staff and patients for post-surgery follow-up examination.
More than 100 residents of Cuajachillo 2 in Nicaragua participated in a community meeting facilitated by Engineers Without Borders, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Chapter. Engineers Without Borders is our partner along with the Rotary Club of Ciudad Sandino for providing clean water distribution to each home in the two communities of Cuajachillo 2 and Trinidad Central.
To date, our project has included working with the community and local authorities, surveying the drilling site, and drilling the well. The next steps include completion of a distribution system design that will provide potable water to each home, determine the associated cost, and fundraise to pay for the project.

DID YOU KNOW?
In 1917 RI President Arch Klumph told the delegates to the Atlanta Convention that "it seems eminently proper that we should accept endowments for the purpose of doing good in the world." The response was polite and favorable, but the fund was slow to materialize. A year later the "Rotary Endowment Fund," as it was first labeled, received its first contribution of US$26.50 from the Rotary Club of Kansas City, Missouri, USA, which was the balance of the Kansas City Convention account following the 1918 annual meeting. Additional small amounts were annually contributed, but after six years it is reported that the endowment fund had only reached US$700. A decade later, The Rotary Foundation was formally established at the 1928 Minneapolis Convention. In the next four years the Foundation fund grew to US$50,000. In 1937 a US$2 million goal was announced for The Rotary Foundation, but these plans were cut short and abandoned with the outbreak of World War II.
In 1947, upon the death of Paul Harris, a new era opened for The Rotary Foundation as memorial gifts poured in to honor the founder of Rotary. From that time, The Rotary Foundation has been achieving its noble objective of furthering "understanding and friendly relations between peoples of different nations." By 1954 the Foundation received for the first time a half million dollars in contributions in a single year, and in 1965 a million dollars was received.
It is staggering to imagine that from those humble beginnings, The Rotary Foundation's goal for its centennial year is US$300 million for educational and humanitarian work around the world. (This final sentence edited with 2016-17 fundraising goal.)
This is one of a series of short articles about Rotary written by Cliff Dochterman, PRIP, and originally published in the Rotary publication, The ABCs of Rotary.

ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE - Week 40
Following on last week's amusing sumo wrestler pin, I thought I'd choose another Japanese pin, my Rotary sushi pin!
I have challenged myself to wear my Rotary pin EVERY day. By doing this I hope to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary's work. I invite all Sunrise Rotarians to join me in wearing a Rotary pin EVERY day.
