CONGRATULATIONS, JORGE PAYRO, STUDENT OF THE MONTH!

Jorge Payro was honored with the La Cuesta Student of the Month award for January 2017. The award is given to students who have demonstrated outstanding academic and personal achievement and who are nominated by their teachers.

Jorge’s math teacher, Norma Lule stated, “When Jorge came to La Cuesta he was not motivated. Now he tries his hardest and is working to be able to graduate in the spring.” Mike Mowers, Jorge’s physics teach, added, "Jorge is a focused student who when he came to La Cuesta asked ‘What can I do to become student of the month?’”

“The Payro family is very supportive. Jorge is a wonderful example of what young men should be,” shared La Cuesta Principal Elise Simmons.

Upon accepting the award, Jorge said, “My parents encouraged me to get an education so I may have a better life and not work as hard as they have had to. I saw my brother fall behind just like me. If I’m doing well maybe my brother will follow in my footsteps.”

SUNRISE ROTARY DONATES UKULELES TO CITY OF THE CHILDREN ORPHANAGE

The Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise contributed two ukuleles to the Ciudad de los Ninos (City of the Children) in Salamanca, Mexico. The tenor ukulele was purchased and donated by Sunrise Rotary using our club's foundation funds, and the second ukulele was personally donated by Bill Abel. Bill says the ukuleles will be used as teaching instruments by students of the orchestra and band. Former Sunrise member, Mark Reinhardt has been a devoted supporter of City of the Children orphanage and personally delivered these instruments on our behalf in December.

STEPS CONFERENCE A SUCCESS!

Seven Sunrise Rotarians attended the STEPS Conference on Saturday at Cal Lutheran University. This year, STEPS highlighted the global concern for human trafficking by increasing awareness and describing ways for Rotary clubs to take action by supporting projects, programs and campaigns to help protect children and adults from human trafficking.

The conference also featured two keynote speeches, two breakout sessions, and 36 exhibits.

DID YOU KNOW?

The structure of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI) forms an interesting chapter in our history. In 1914, after Rotary expanded across the Atlantic to Great Britain and Ireland, a British Association of Rotary Clubs was established as part of the International Association of Rotary Clubs. During World War I there was little contact between the international clubs, and the British association held the small number of Rotary clubs together in Great Britain, Ireland and a few other European communities.

Following the war, a new Rotary International Constitution was adopted in 1922 that established the principle that whenever a country had 25 Rotary clubs it could become a "territorial unit" and thus have a representative on the RI board and receive other specific powers. The clubs in Great Britain and Ireland immediately petitioned for and received the status of a "territorial unit." No other group in the world made such a request or received that status.

This is one of a series of short articles about Rotary written by Cliff Dochterman, PRIP, and originally published in the Rotary publication, The ABCs of Rotary.
ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE - Week 32

If you think you may have caught me in duplicate pin posting, this is the 2017 STEPS Conference pin. I've been to the STEPS conference many times and my selection from a couple of weeks ago featured the 2012 conference pin. This year's conference was great . . . lots of good projects, visionary ideas, energy, and passion!

I have challenged myself to wear my Rotary pin EVERY day. By doing this I hope to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary's work. I invite all Sunrise Rotarians to join me in wearing a Rotary pin EVERY day.
