WINTER HIKE AT SB BOTANIC GARDEN
Saturday was a perfect day for a hike at the beautiful Santa Barbara Botanic Garden! We walked out to the new Pritzlaff Conservation Center area with stunning views, came across a traditional tea ceremony getting started at the Japanese Tea House, and then headed back through the trails in the gardens, complete with running water in Mission Creek!
Thank you, Diana Washburn, for organizing the outing!

CLAWS FOR A CAUSE
President Chris and Karen attended the Rotary Club of Montecito's fundraiser, Claws for a Cause, on Saturday as guests of their President, Bernadette Bagley. The event included a traditional New England style lobster boil, dessert auction, and live auction. Funds raised from the event support the club's local and international projects, such as their Mumosho Water Project (81 water faucets/spigots that supply drinking water to 12 villages) in the Congo. Our club was a contributing partner on this project. This is a good example of clubs helping clubs and the goodwill between Rotarians. Please consider participating in another club's activities when an opportunity presents itself.

JANUARY HAPPY HOUR
Thursday, January 26, 2017
5 - 7 pm
The Garden
38 West Victoria
Join us for happy hour gathering at The Garden in the Santa Barbara Public Market. Happy hour is 3-6 pm.
Free for District 5240 Rotarians, Rotaractors, and Interactors and their guests.
Join us at STEPS, where Rotarians from across the district and other nonprofit partners will meet and share projects for "doing good in the world." This year, STEPS will highlight the global concern for human trafficking by increasing awareness and describing ways for Rotary clubs to take action by supporting projects, programs and campaigns to help protect children and adults from human trafficking.
In 1931 Rotarians in France and Germany organized the "petit comite," a small group with the goal of fostering better relations between the people of these two neighboring nations. Since that time, Rotarians throughout Europe have led the way in creating Inter-country Committees to encourage contacts between Rotarians and Rotary clubs across national boundaries. Inter-country Committees have now been established in many parts of the world to promote friendship as well as to cooperate in sponsoring World Community Service projects, student exchanges and other activities to improve understanding among nations. Frequently, the Inter-country Committees sponsor visits of Rotarians and their families across national borders and arrange intercity meetings and conferences. In some instances, Inter-country Committees are created between countries separated by great distances in an effort to encourage goodwill and friendship with matched or partner areas of the world. The Inter-country Committees coordinate their efforts with the district governors of their countries and always serve in an advisory capacity to districts and clubs.
Inter-country Committees provide an additional means for Rotary clubs and Rotarians to fulfil the responsibilities of the Fourth Avenue of Service - international understanding, goodwill and peace.

ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE - Week 30
No sooner had President-elect Ian H.S. Riseley announced his theme for the 2017-18 year, Rotary: Making a Difference, I was on the phone with Russell-Hampton ordering a theme pin for myself. Riseley says, "We know that we can do more together than we could ever hope to do alone." I am inspired by our collective efforts as Rotarians and the power to make a difference for those who need us.
I have challenged myself to wear my Rotary pin EVERY day. By doing this I hope to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary's work. I invite all Sunrise Rotarians to join me in wearing a Rotary pin EVERY day.
