CONGRATULATIONS ON A SUCCESSFUL ROTARY YEAR!

Dear club member,

It has been an honor and privilege to serve as your club president this Rotary year.  Thank you for your fellowship, support, and dedication to service that makes our club great and our world a better place to live.

As the Rotary year comes to an end I hope it has been a fun and fulfilling year for you!  I’m reminded how busy and engaged we’ve all been.  Our club’s many accomplishments have been recognized by the District leadership.  At the District Governor’s step down and club recognition event last weekend, I was informed our club received the Governor’s Gold Club of Distinction.  This is an honor bestowed upon a handful of Rotary clubs in our district who successfully completed a specified criteria in the areas of Club Service, Community Service, International Service, Vocational Service, Youth Service, Membership, Foundation, and Public Image.  Thank you and congratulations for your contributions to our successful year!

I think back to 2002 when I was inducted as a new member of Santa Barbara Sunrise.  I knew I joined a special organization whose members were committed to meaningful humanitarian work while having a lot of fun.  It is here I met my cherished life partner, Karen Kawaguchi.  It is here I made lifelong friends and developed trusted business relationships.  Back then, I recall being inspired by club members like E Russell Smith who was leading efforts to raise money and ship containers of low cost wheel chairs to those in need around the world.  Today I continue to be inspired by fellow club members like Tom Heath who have spearheaded our Camp Whittier service project for many years serving the youth in our local community.

Each of us brings something special to our club.  Borrowing a quote from our founder, Paul P. Harris, “You will profit from Rotary in proportion to what you put into your efforts.”  I have found this to be true.  I also believe that “If you can dream it, you can do it.”  Be inspired!

Respectfully,
President Chris

DISTRICT STEP DOWN

At this past Saturday’s District Step Down and Club Recognition Luncheon, District Governor Nick Frankle recognized clubs and individuals for “changing the lives of those in our community and around the world.” He reported, as of the end of May the District had raised $550,000 in Annual Fund giving and $1 million in total giving. The afternoon was sprinkled (literally) with fairy dust by the two District Fairy Godmothers, Vicki Arndt and Susan Murata, who emceed the celebration.

Brenda Cressey, incoming Trustee of The Rotary Foundation, spoke about the importance of women in Rotary and encouraged clubs to engage women at the leadership levels. Three important women in District 5240 were remembered fondly, Heather Frankle, Roxanne Nomura, and Nancy Falconer.

Here is a summary of the awards presented to clubs for their extraordinary efforts this year:
  • Best Small Club – Rotary Club of Grover Beach

DID YOU KNOW?

Editor's note: For the past 51 weeks I have been sharing chapters from ABCs of Rotary written by Cliff Dochterman. You may have wondered, "Who is Cliff Dochterman?" For this final issue of the newsletter, I would like to share a little about Cliff Dochterman himself.

Cliff Dochterman’s professional career included 40 years in higher education administration. Twenty years each at the University of California at Berkeley and twenty years at the University of the Pacific in Stockton.

Cliff has served as president of the Stockton Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the San Joaquin County Parks and Recreation Commission. He has had a long association with the Boy Scouts of America, and has received three of the Scouts highest honors -- Silver Beaver, Silver Antelope and Distinguished Eagle awards. He has received honorary degrees from several universities for his humanitarian work in the world.

Cliff Dochterman is probably best known for his volunteer work for Rotary International over the past 46 years. He has served in almost every Rotary assignment in the world -- from Berkeley Rotary club president, to District Governor, to Rotary International Director, R.I. Vice President, Trustee of The Rotary Foundation, and President of Rotary International. Cliff has probably served on more Rotary committees and talked to more Rotary Clubs than anyone in the world. He is the author of the booklet, “ABC’s of Rotary,” which has been translated into twenty languages.

In 1992, Cliff became the worldwide President of Rotary International. He selected the theme, “Real Happiness Is Helping Others.” He has traveled the world many times and has been honored by heads of state of dozens of countries for spreading goodwill and world understanding. He was one of the pioneers of the PolioPlus program. Cliff and wife Mary Elena reside in Moraga, California.

ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE - Week 52

I challenged myself to wear a Rotary pin every day in hopes to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary's work. Throughout the year I received countless inquiries about the pin I was wearing and had the chance to share my own Rotary story. I saw more of you wearing your Rotary pins and that made me happy. I hope it opened up conversations for you too.

The pins that seemed to get the most attention were the shooting star, bee (the second of the three bee pins I featured), and the sumo wrestlers got the most laughs. My favorite though is this week’s double dragonflies.

A pin I hope to receive in the future is the Major Donor pin. Judith’s Major Donor recognition two weeks ago has inspired me to work hard and increase my giving to The Rotary Foundation. It is one of the few pins you cannot buy.

My pin collecting was inspired by Madeleine Albright, former ambassador to the United Nations and former Secretary of State. Albright discovered the power of jewelry to convey a foreign policy message. She also wore them to express her moods and opinions. An exhibition of her pins, Read My Pins: The Madeleine Albright Collection travels the country at museums and was recently at the Reagan Library.

Thank you for indulging me in this challenge. I hope you enjoyed taking a peek at my collection. I will continue to collect and wear Rotary pins and I hope you will too.
