Our next TWO meetings are being held at The Buzz Inn. This week's featured speaker is Suzanne Schalo of Emerald City Cornhole. She helped us navigate our inaugural Cornhole Tournament last month. She will explain how cornhole became such a popular activity and how it's morphed into competitive tournaments.

Rotary Exchange - A Year in Norway

Wearing a suit coat full of badges, Josie Jarillo Odegaard talked about her year long Rotary Youth Exchange in Norway that she completed in June. Josie was our guest speaker on Friday, August 9th, Josie commented that a Rotary Youth Exchange student from Brazil's jacket was lite up like a Christmas tree. The photo on the left is a banner from the Elksmarka Rotary Klubb.

She started her Norway education in Oslo Handelsgymnasium where the rich and elite send their children but she didn't make any connections with fellow students. Josie transferred to Edward Munch Vidergaende Skole with much better success and interaction with her fellow Norwegian classmates.

During her year long visit to Norway, she was able to travel to Sweden, Spain, Germany, Denmark, Amsterdam and met her mother in Italy. Odegaard is a common name in Norway and she has pictures standing in front of Odegaard Men's Clothing store. There were 15 Rotary Youth Exchange students in Norway from many backgrounds and countries. Rotary brought together the students who became friends for life. She is having an in-bound exchange meeting this weekend so she can tell the youth coming here what their year will be like. Skiing was on the agenda during her stay in Norway. There were two mandatory meetings and two optional meetings during the year long visit with fellow Rotary Exchange students. Josie's family visited during the Easter holidays.

Syttende Mai is a big event in Norway. Josie is pictured above in front of the Palace where the King, Queen and Princess were seen by all of the attendees. Josie is wearing the holiday outfit worn by her mother when Kristin visited Norway many years ago. This major event is on May 17th. Josie showed some of her favorite foods and she brought a wonderful treat to share with us. Josie was a tremendous representative of our Club and the City of Lake Stevens. Bright, young and ready to begin college at Western Washington.

Rotary Scholarship Recipients Updates

Our two special guest speakers on Friday, August 2nd were Rachel O'Malley and Sean Sanchez. They returned to our Club to talk about the benefits they received from receiving a Lake Stevens Rotary Scholarship.

Rachel O'Malley received a $3,000 scholarship in 2023 to attend Brigham Young University for Elementary Education. Rachel talked about the benefits of our scholarship. She has met some awesome members at BYU and has been able to volunteer in an elementary school in Utah. Rachel will work on her Master's Degree after earning her elementary education degree. Before that, she will be working abroad this year and is looking forward to the experience.

Sean Sanchez received the largest award of $5,000 Vocational Scholarship in 2022 to attend WyoTech in Wyoming for Auto Collision/Upholstery. Sean worked with four generations of upholsters who have continued to be his mentors. During his time at WyoTech he worked on hot rods and receiving an Outstanding Student award. After the upholstering class, he took courses in collision repair, welding frames, painting autos as well as metal fabrication. He has rebuilt his truck from inside out with a new motor, custom paint job and interior upholstering. According to Sean, his truck has turned out great.

He had the chance to work for either Boeing or Duncan Aviation. He chose Duncan Aviation so that he could work on the interiors of private jets owned by some well known people in the entertainment world and more. Sean's goal is to own his own firm sometime in the future. In his spare time, he is coaching wrestling.

Following their presentation, Lance Morehouse, Chair of the Lake Stevens Rotary Scholarship Committee asked each of them some follow up questions. Two very inspiring young individuals.
