This Week's Meeting
My apologies that I didn't get a bulletin sent out last week! It was a very busy week for me. I appreciate your patience. This week's bulletin includes the recaps from the two immediate past meetings.

Speaker
The featured speaker this week is Linda Lyshall, PhD, Executive Director of the Snohomish Conservation District. Conservation districts offer free help to residents to steward land, water, forests, wildlife and related natural resources. Their mission, which began after the devastating dust bowl era of the 1930’s, relied on working with farmers and rural landowners on a one-on-one basis. Dr. Lyshall recently joined the the Snohomish District as Executive Director. She is a forward-thinking leader with 15 years of experience facilitating the development, assessment, and execution of natural resource strategic plans and programs. Prior to joining our local District, she served as the Executive Director of the San Juan Islands Conservation District for five years and before that as a Regional Liaison for Snohomish and Island counties with the state’s Puget Sound Action Team. Her educational background includes degrees in Environmental Policy, Natural Resource Management, and Leadership and Change.

Fundraising
Last week an informal group of members met to discuss sponsorship of two of our biggest fundraisers. And, no DJ, we didn't talk about your fundraiser. More information will be coming out soon as every member will be tasked with finding sponsors for the Viking Coin Quest and Corks & Kegs. Start thinking about businesses and people you will want to connect with to help support our causes. If you want to be part of the Sponsorship Development Team, contact Jim Haugen.

Club Meetings
Our Club will be returning to in-person meetings next week! The meetings will be set up as a hybrid format to accommodate members, guest and visitors who aren't ready to attend in person. Members recently were sent a email about this. Please make sure you respond.

Board Meeting
This Thursday is the monthly Board Meeting. All members are invited and encouraged to attend. A link to the meeting will be sent to the membership. This is a great opportunity to find out how our Club works as well as do a meeting makeup.

The link to our YouTube Channel is now available on our website and our weekly bulletins. You can view recent online meetings. If you watch any of them, you can count it as a makeup. Just let our Secretary, Gary O'Rielly know.

Providence Hospice Care of Snohomish County
Our guest speakers last Friday were Dr. Jim Congdon and Mark Johnson, Executive Director of Providence Hospice Care of Snohomish County. Mark is a Past President of the Rotary Club of  Lynnwood.

What is Hospice? Hospice Care is defined as supportive care in the final phase of a terminal illness when a cure is not possible. Holistic care addresses, physical, emotional and spiritual concerns, seeing death as a natural process. The philosophy of hospice is to provide support for the patients emotional, social and spiritual needs as well as medical symptoms to treat the whole person. Ninety-nine percent of hospice care is in the patients home.

The Hospice Care Center opened in 2016 after a $5 million dollar building campaign. The hospice movement was started by two women: Dr. Cicely Saunders (England) and Florence Wold (US). There are 350 member agencies in over 100 countries. In 2018 there were 4,600 hospice agencies serving 1.5 million patients in the United States. There are only three hospice providers in Snohomish County.
Sister Georgette Bayless who passed away in 2016 was the one responsible for starting hospice at Providence Hospital. Providence Hospice and Home Care is non-life threating and services range from 290-310 patients per day.

Camp Erin is a child's hospice care dealing with grief brought on by the loss of a loved one. The Camp is named after Erin who developed liver cancer at 15 and died at 17. Erin's wish was to visited with Jamie Moyer, former pitcher for the Seattle Mariners. Camp Erin started in Washington but has expanded across the United States.

The video link on pediatric hospice care which is one of the only support systems in the area was unavailable to present during the meeting.  You can watch it by clicking this link.
Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescues Launches Community Survey
Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue has launched a Community Survey and are inviting residents to make their voices heard. They are a growing fire and emergency service district that now serves over 175,000 residents. The fire district is committed to engaging the community in order to serve them better and incorporate their needs into future planning efforts. They are wanting to gain input on the following:
  • satisfaction with fire service from Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue
  • how to pay for fire services
  • what residents think of alternatives to property tax funding
  • the urgency of capital facilities priorities
Residents living within Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue's jurisdiction can complete the survey on-line. The survey should take about 10 minutes and all answers are confidential. Only the 3rd party research provider will see resident's individual responses. The community survey is open from May 4, 2021 to May 16, 2021.

Residents can access the survey using the following link: Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue Community Survey.

Youth Service Month
Rotary International May's Theme is Youth Service Month. Our Club sponsors the Interact Club at Lake Stevens High School and support their activities. Four members of the Interact Club leadership are participated in the Youth Adventures in Leadership (YAIL) virtual program--AIM--for the past few weeks. Other activities involving Interact Club members is the street clean up project.

This month our Vocational Services Committee interviewed high school college bound seniors and vocational candidates for scholarships.  Although we are a small Club, we are able to provide $22,000 in scholarships this year and in the past.
Classification Talk by Brian Rewis
The program this past week included new member Brian Rewis, Farmers Insurance Agency owner, giving his Classification Talk. Brian is a native Texan and dislikes talking about himself. He moved to the area in 2016 looking for cooler weather. Brian met his wife, Cassie, in a pool hall 24 years ago and hit it off immediately. They have two children. The oldest son is 20 and is just finishing Boot Camp. The second son is 18 years old. Brian has always enjoyed volunteering especially with his church and sports coaching his sons' in baseball and soccer.  Brian and Cassie enjoy getting to know their friends.

Prior to getting into the insurance field, Brian was shucking oysters. When he met Cassie, her father was an adjustor who always talked about his field of work. So, Brian entered the field as an adjustor. It really started when his father-in-law would share so many stories about his various adjusting activities. Started in the agency as an agency producer. Since moving to the area, Brian became an Agency-Owner in August 2020.

When they decided to leave the hot humid climate of Texas, they loaded all three vehicles and headed for Snohomish County. He thought they would start out in Monroe but a friend had a house for sale with owner financing available and they bought the house and found themselves in Lake Stevens. He had previously visited Lake Stevens but only knew where the Target and Safeway stores were. Another draw to Lake Stevens was the Life Point Church. His youngest son is close friends of Seth Low. He joined Rotary because of our involvement with the skate park and all of our community activities.

The Everett AquaSox
The second part of our program Friday, April 30th, was Danny Tetzlaff, General Manager of the Everett AquaSox. Danny moved to the area 5-6 years ago. This year has seen the advent of a brand new MLB structure. This past year, Major League Baseball took over the minor league baseball organization. The change over brought several major organizational changes.

The Everett AquaSox are a member of the High-A West program and continues their affiliation with the Seattle Mariners. The AquaSox play their home games at Funko Field adjacent to Everett Memorial Stadium in central Everett which has a 3,682 seat capacity.  Covid 19 has had a huge impact of the Everett AquaSox organization, MLB and the State of Washington. All of the usual requirements are in place. Limited seating, face mask wearing all the time except when eating, social distancing, no cash sales and expanded longer season going from 76 games a year to 132. Since they travel to games in a bus, MLB requires the addition of one more buses so that the players and staff can do social distancing. The added cost goes from $50,000 per year to over $200,000 in additional travel cost. Time to play ball.
