The featured speaker at this week's meeting is Haley Karnes, Campaign Development Manager for the Pacific Northwest Chapter of Blood Cancer United. Blood Cancer United used to be called the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society which has been in existence since 1949. The Society is a voluntary health charitable organization dedicated to fighting blood cancer world-wide. They have a long history of supporting research and helping patients and their families through the process of living with blood cancers.

Our guest speaker on Friday, February 20th was Nate Nehring, Snohomish County Council Chair and Board Trustee, Economic Alliance of Snohomish County. He has been on the County Council since 2017. Prior to that, he was an Middle School Science teacher. He lives in Arlington with his wife and four children.
He started the conversation acknowledging that Snohomish County population is 873,000 and 43% unincorporated with 298,000 non-ag jobs. The County has 3,450 employees. The Snohomish County biannual budget is $3.08 billion dollars with this fall being a new budget cycle. In the budget, $700 million in the general fund will support law and justice as well as general government. The Councilman always looks for budget cuts before considering any new tax increases.
In the public sector realm, the county continues to work on chronic nuisance properties, 41 corrections deputy vacancies, and continue working on health department and code enforcement teams working together.
In regards to homelessness in 2025, the Point in Time count for the county, identified 1,140 homeless individuals which is down 2% from 2024. In terms of economic development, Paine Field is a key component with a Master Plan to accommodate 4 terminals.
He stated that Ray Stephanson is the new CEO of the Economic Alliance of Snohomish County as of December 2024. Nehring talked about the Regional Apprenticeship Program with programs continuing to grow.
Major events in 2026 is the FIFA World Cup June 11th to July 19 with one million travelers expected to visit the region plus the 250th Anniversary of the United States. Many more topics were included in his presentation including Childcare and Family Initiatives, the YMCA opening a new ELC facility in Marysville and Environmental Conservations as another important area for the County.

Interact is a service club for youth ages 14-18. The name is a combination of the words international and action. We join Clubs in over 120 countries around the world. The global youth network is dedicated to community and international service. Every Interact Club project, great or small, has a lasting impact on society worldwide.
