I must apologize that I didn't get the Bulletin out last week. I have been extremely busy at work. I appreciate your patience. This week's featured speaker is our own Fire Chief Kevin O'Brien! He will talk to us about the upcoming levy that is on the ballot that we will vote on next month. The levy is to continue financial support by the residents of the Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue Department. Our support is critical to helping provide the superior services that the SRFR Department gives to the residents and visitors alike day in and day out every day of the year. After the meeting the Chief along with the Crew at Station 81 are offering a tour of the Station. The Station is directly across the street from our meeting place.

Bao Tran - The Paper Tigers and film making

Our guest speaker on Friday, September 29th was Bao Tran who wrote and directed "The Paper Tiger" in 2020. The film is an American martial arts action comedy. Accompanying Bao was Vicky Bergund-Davenport of Washington Filmworks and Laura Bettelheim, Lake Stevens Film Festival. Washington Filmworks is a non-profit organization that supports filmmakers and film production in Washington state.

Boa Tran used the program Kickstarter to launch the production of The Paper Tiger film in early 2018. Funding on Kickstarter is limited to a 30-day endeavor to reach your goal. Goal was $120,000 and they raised $124,503 on Kickstarter which was 113% funded.

The Paper Tiger did well at the Cannes Film Festival and is listed #6 in the top 10 movies shown on Netflix. The film cost $1 million dollars and was produced at their production facility in Shoreline. The national film debut of The Paper Tiger was at the old Crest Theater in Shoreline.

Vicky credited former Senator Steve Hobbs for sponsoring legislation that provided B & O tax credits for the film industry. Unfortunately, the legislature funded only $15 million in tax credits for the film industry.

Alzheimer's Association of NW Washington

Our guest speaker on Friday, September 22nd was Jerri Wood, NW Washington Community Outreach Manager for the Alzheimer's Association. This was a conversation about Alzheimer's, the ten warning signs of Alzheimer's as well as understanding Alzheimer's and dementia. The average cost of a memory care facility is $12,000-$15,000 per month.

There are free resources available through their office in Lynnwood. Jerri works and trains with volunteers and she covers several counties in the northwest corner of the state. Currently she is working with about 40 volunteers. Upcoming events include the Walk for Alzheimer's at Boxcar Park in Everett on Saturday, October 7th at 10 am and the Longest Day event.

There is "Around the Clock" Alzheimer's Disease Information and Support. This is done through a 24/7 Helpline. A recent study found that people who make even a single call to the 24/7 Helpline experience improved mental health and are better able to manage emotions, access resources and engage in action planning.

Peacebuilding and conflict prevention: Rotary encourages conversations to foster understanding within and across cultures. We train adults and young leaders to prevent and mediate conflict and help refugees who have fled dangerous areas.
Disease prevention and treatment equip communities to stop the spread of life-threatening diseases like polio, HIV/AIDS, and malaria. We improve and expand access to low-cost and free health care in developing areas.
Water, sanitation, and hygiene: We support local solutions to bring clean water, sanitation, and hygiene to more people. We share our expertise and work alongside community leaders and educators to make sure our projects succeed in the long term.
