This Week's Meeting
May be an image of Mariah Low
The featured speaker at this week's meeting is the General Manager of the Lake Stevens Sewer District, Mariah Low. Low started in this position a few months ago after a career with the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab. She succeeded Tonya Seifert as GM. Low served for a while on the Board of Commissioners with the District before taking on this new role. She will provide an update on the District and how the rapid development in our community affects what happens to the waste that we create. An avid outdoorswoman, you will often find her exploring the numerous trails in the region.

U 40 Club-Rotary Club of Portland, Oregon
Our guest speaker this past Friday, March 12th was Curtis Shirey from the Rotary Club of Portland, Oregon who talked about a new initiative program to recruit and retain members under the age of 40. Currently, the Rotary Club of Portland has a dedicated membership actively serving and looking ahead to ensure the torch will be passed onward and upward. The U40 program has been initiated to induce an annual class of new candidates desiring to emerge as leaders in the community as well as becoming active Rotarians.

Curtis is the current Chair of the U40 Club as well as serving on the Trust Board. The U40 Club is how Curtis was introduced to Rotary. The purpose of the U40 Club is to reach out to young established professionals in order to make the Club more viable now and in the future. Again, the purpose is to recruit and retain membership in the downtown Rotary Club of Portland. Club survival is the goal of the Portland Club - U40 initiative. Leadership training is another aspect of the program. The U40 program has helped Curtis in his professional development.

The community lens is the first goal of the organization. The group meets on the second Wednesday of each month and always with a program. The monthly meeting last 1 1/2 hours each month. Recently, the Mayor of Portland was a guest speaker and part of the program includes a roundtable discussion on issues with the program speaker and is important to the community. Group service projects is another important goal of the U40 Club. The group helps with the planning and funding of community projects that they take on each year. One project was planting trees in a wetlands reserve area and another one was working on eliminating invasive weeds in an area along the Gorge.

Mentor program has been established between the regular Club and the U40 Club. Each member of the U40 Club is required to serve as a Vice Chair of a committee or project. During the Covid-19 timeframe, the U40 Club has worked on doing meetings virtually as well as promoting inclusion and diversity. Another goal is to recruit people of color. They will open up their recruiting strategy again this year in about two weeks.

RE: Strong Support for $2.1 Million Civic Center Phase 3 Request by Reps. Berg and Lovick for 2021-23 Capital Budget, “Local and Community Projects” Category

Dear Chair Tharinger and Vice-Chairs Callan and Hackney:

We are coming together on behalf of Farmers Markets, Chambers, civic clubs, festivals, and area rowing clubs, to let you know of our strong support for the $2.1 million request by Reps. April Berg and John Lovick (D-44th Dist.) that will complete Phase 3 of Lake Stevens’ “Civic Center” project and help the City complete what will be an incredible transformation of the community’s downtown and lakefront area. The Phase 3 work on the Civic Center project features site preparation and construction work that will allow Lake Stevens to develop a “festival street” that will act as a community and pedestrian gathering area, and to finish improvements at the North Cove Park adjacent to the area and fronting the Lake. These projects would allow the City to complete a major revitalization that has turned the Lake Stevens downtown center from a very sleepy area into a thriving, vibrant community core with a “Mill Spur” community center, a bustling Farmers Market, a graded and rebuilt park that allows residents and visitors to rediscover their lakefront, and multimodal connections that bring pedestrians, bicyclists, and tourists to the area. We tremendously appreciate the previous legislative investments in the Civic Center project, allocations that have been matched by more than $2.5 million in City funds. These investments, together with the Phase 3 project to come, will make Lake Stevens an important destination point in Snohomish County for pedestrians and bicyclists, for residents and tourists, and for all those who have seen the City grow from a resort town of 900 to a diverse community of 35,000 that is expected to accommodate more than 50,000 residents within the next decade. We have seen Lake Stevens put previous state funding to work to build improvements in a timely manner and can assure you that will happen again with funding for Civic Center Phase 3. We hope you will provide funding for this transformational project and thank you for your consideration.
