This Friday and next there will be informal gatherings at The Buzz Inn. Anyone is welcome to participate in those breakfasts. Our regular meetings resume on January 10th at the School District Administration Building.
Don't forget to register for the 2025 District Conference: Abracadabra - The Magic of Rotary. The Conference will be at the Tulalip Resort. Time is getting short to enter the drawing for the stay at the Governor's Cabin! IF you register AND pay in full by the end of the month, you'll be entered into a drawing for a two night stay at District Governor Dave's cabin on the shore of Camano Island. Last week's program was a Classification Talk by Dr. Mary Templeton, Superintendent of the Lake Stevens School District. Mary has been a Rotarian for seven years starting in Camas Washougal and transferring to our Club in August 2024 when she became the our Superintendent.
Mary commented that Classification Talks evolved when Paul Harris founded Rotary International in 1905. In the early 1900s, bankers and professionals were asked to discuss their professional and personal backgrounds with other Club members. It wasn't until the 1980s that women were admitted to join Rotary.
Mary was raised in the Portland area, schooled in the Beaverton School District, and attended the University of Oregon, concentrating on theatre and the German language. She spent some time in Germany honing her German language skills. She has one sister in education and one in opera. Music and the arts are important to her which started in her childhood, with her mother playing the violin and participating in theatre and was in several plays in her youth.
Met her husband in California who passed away about five years ago. She has three adult children. Her children are runners and play the violin. Her children are Brenda, Nick, and Tyler. All very important to Mary as they enjoy their vocations in poetry, running, boxing, and one running his own film company.
She wasn't drawn to education or teaching in her early years. However, she attended California State University to get her teacher's degree and taught in Modesto. The joy of learning and teaching captured her and she only spoke German in the classroom. Students were surprised when she spoke English in public.
A little theatre was always in her daily routine. She received her Master's Degree from Eastern Washington and one of her professors convinced her to consider a career as a school principal. She went to WSU to get her Doctorate in School District leadership.
In closing, Mary acknowledged that the School Board approved going for another chance at their School Bond Issue on February 11th.

Jennifer Jones, the first female Rotary International President, is a Canadian communications executive who traveled the world in 2022-23 to advance Rotary’s work promoting peace and unity and embracing one another despite our differences. Jones is founder and president of Media Street Productions Inc., an award-winning media company in Windsor. She was chair of the board of governors of the University of Windsor and chair of the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce. She has been recognized for her service with the YMCA Peace Medallion, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, and Wayne State University’s Peacemaker of the Year Award, a first for a Canadian. Jones holds a Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) She has served Rotary as RI vice president, foundation trustee, director, training leader, committee chair, moderator, and district governor. She played a lead role in Rotary’s rebranding effort by serving as chair of the Strengthening Rotary’s Advisory Group. She is the co-chair of the End Polio Now Countdown to History Campaign Committee, which aims to raise $150 million for polio eradication efforts.
Ramesh Ferris, a Canadian polio survivor (originally from India) and a global advocate in the fight against polio. He has worked with Global Citizen, Rotary International, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He has shared our Rotary End polio message with countless heads of state and other world leaders. In 2008 Ramesh hand-cycled 7140kms over 6months from Victoria, BC to Cape Spear, NL in program called Cycle to Walk to raise funds and awareness for polio eradication, education, and rehabilitation.
Gwen Jones is the creator and producer of the I’m A Rotarian podcast and Greeting from America on Rotary Radio UK. She is a veteran producer, radio personality, voiceover artist, singer, and actor with 30+ years of experience in communication arts. Established in October 2019, the IAR podcast has a growing international audience of thousands of listeners across the world that is growing everyday. The goal of the IAR podcast is to introduce the extraordinary people who call themselves Rotarians to the world, to share the incredible work they are doing as People of Action, and to foster stronger connections and friendships between fellow Rotarians. The IAR podcast can be heard on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher and wherever you get your podcasts.
4. Participate in a murder mystery game over the weekend with clues given during the conference.

Interact is a service club for youth ages 14-18. The name is a combination of the words international and action. We join Clubs in over 120 countries around the world. The global youth network is dedicated to community and international service. Every Interact Club project, great or small, has a lasting impact on society worldwide.

Our regular Rotary Club Meetings are at the Lake Stevens School District Educational Service Center lower level Community Room located at 12309 22nd St NE. We start at 7:30 am. Click here for the online link. There will not be any breakfast served. However, coffee will be available. Visitors are always welcome.
On December 27th & January 3rd we are not having formal meetings. Instead Members and Friends will meet at The Buzz Inn in downtown Lake Stevens at the same time. Join us for breakfast if you are in town.
