Our program this week is a New Member Orientation. Club Membership Chair Jim Steinruck will give the new members their formal orientation to Rotary. This is good information for all members though as Rotary is a dynamic organization and there is always something to learn about Rotary.
The Board Meeting is Wednesday at Bell Properties. All members are invited to attend.

In 90 minutes ten Club members picked up trash along Market Place and Lundeen Parkway between 91st Av and Highway 9 Saturday morning October 24th. They made quick work of the litter and hauled off quite a bit of stuff. They were even spotted by LSPD.
The second program last week was presented by Doug Warren, of Larson Financial Services, on behalf of the Lake Stevens Food Bank. The Food Bank has launched a Capitol campaign to expand the food bank facility. Currently, the Food Bank facility has small aisles and very tight quarters to operate with only 1,100 square feet of space. Currently, customers to the Food Bank start lining up at 9am each Thursday. The Food Bank doesn't open until 1pm. They currently serve around 300 families but with a newly expanded facility they could serve more in the community.
Planning for the New Building:The Food Bank has secured land next to Ebenezer Church for the new building. The new facility will solve a difficult problem at the existing location which is inside the church basement. It is over-crowded with food, supplies, staff and customers, making reasonable services to those in need very challenging. The property was donated to Ebenezer Church and in turn was given a 40 year lease. They are various ways to donate to the Capitol campaign. The donor categories will provide an opportunity to recognize All donors in the Bronze, Silver and higher categories in the new Food Bank facility. Cost of the Capitol campaign is $900,000. There will be 3,080 sq. ft of space with an unfinished basement with potential for a thrift store. Ann Anderson is the manager of the Food Bank. History: The Lake Stevens Community Food Bank was established in 1978 and as stated previously, serves over 300 local families each month. One part-time staff person, together with 75 volunteers donate over 600 hours per month to store and deliver food to the many recipients who wait in line for hours at the Ebenezer Church location every Thursday. There are 21 Food Banks in Snohomish County.
Last week, our Club was the beneficiary of two wonderful and noteworthy programs. Diane Demeroutis talked about the Allstate Foundation's involvement in Purple Purse, a program to bring public awareness about domestic violence caused by financial issues. Long term safety is a major part of the campaign. Most of these women have children. One in four women experience domestic violence. Join the Purple Purse Challenge which has been on-going this month from October 1-27th.

Grade Road is closed between 30th St NE and 32nd St NE. City engineers have been monitoring this section of road for a long time. Catherine Creek runs parallel with Grade Road for quite a ways but is closest in this two block stretch. Mick Monken, Public Works Director for the City of Lake Stevens, says that the embankment on the east side of the road has settled. The embankment extended under the road surface. Without anything to support the asphalt it is too dangerous to drive on.
He added that it is unknown how long the closure will last. The embankment is on private property. There are also waterway issues that have to be considered. With the wet season approaching it could be months before stabilization efforts are started. Fortunately, there is a well marked detour. Community Transit and the Lake Stevens School District have re-routed their busses. The impact on riders is negligible.
This is an important travel corridor, but, we want everyone to be safe. Fortunately, no one hurt and that is paramount above all else.
