CASA works collaboratively with legal, social services and treatment providers toward the goal of securing or maintaining a safe, stable, permanent home for the child or teen. CASA is a national association that supports and promotes court appointed advocates. It was a judge's idea. In 1976, Seattle juvenile court Judge David W. Soukup had insufficient information to make a life-changing decision for a 3-year-old girl who had suffered from child abuse. That is where the idea came from. These children, who had experienced abuse or neglect, needed trained volunteers speaking up in the courtroom for their best interest. That idea has spread nationally and today supports children in all of our states who are at risk. And it all started in Seattle. After the judge retired, he became a CASA volunteer.
