Feeding 198 Vulnerable Seniors During Lockdown

The speakers at The Malibu Rotary Club Zoom meeting May 20 will be Kasey Earnest, Executive Director of Boys & Girls Club and Siugen Constanza, Director of Community Outreach and Programs Impact, Boys & Girls Clubs of Malibu,
Boys & Girls Clubs of Malibu has been helping people of all ages for many years. It's importance in the Malibu community became especially important following the Woolsey Fire of 2018. The devastation of the fire continues to impact people. The Malibu Rotary Club with grants from the Rotary District has made grants to B&GCM since the fire to help them assist those most in need. The $7,200 Malibu Rotary Club gave them recently is the balance of the money the District collected for victims of the fire has been used for a strategic purpose. Kasey and Siugen will talk about that at this meeting.

We all know how the COVID-19 Pandemic has affected all of our lives so far in 2020. This includes all schools, which have shifted from learning in classrooms to learning in front of a computers at home.
The national debate on when and how schools will reopen is both a national issue as well as a local one. Debates on the subject are being heard from President Trump, the CDC, school administrators, teachers, students, parents--everyone everywhere.
The Malibu Rotary Club has invited Malibu High School Patrick Miller to give his take on how the COVID--19 Pandemic has affected Malibu High School, past, present and future.

Options for Peace, 1945

The United States detonated two nuclear weapons over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945, respectively, with the consent of the United Kingdom, as required by the Quebec Agreement. One of the world's exports on the Pacific part of World War II will be the guest speaker of the Malibu Rotary Club at a special Zoom meeting of the Malibu Rotary Club on August 5, 2020. Jonathan Parshall is the co-author, with Anthony Tully, of Shattered Sword: The Untold Story of the Battle of Midway (Potomac). His writing has been published in leading military publications, including Warship International and The Naval War College Review. The founder and webmaster of www.combinedfleet.com, the premier reference web site on the Imperial Japanese Navy, Parshall has worked as a historical adviser to the BBC and a consultant on the 1999 mission to the Midway battle site by the Nauticos Corporation and the U.S. Navy Oceanographic Office. He lives with his family in Minneapolis. In his presentation at the August 5, 2020 Zoom meeting of the Malilbu Rotary Club he till be talking about the options the US was considering in ending World War II, and why droppng the bombs was the option chosen. |

The New Rotary Year & Agenda

On August 26, Malibu Rotary Club will welcome Rotary District Governor (2020-2021) Bette Hall, who will talk about Rotary plans for the coming year during the Covd-19 pandemic. A member of Calabasas Rotary Club since 2007, Bette Hall has held various positions, both within her Club and District 5280. Positions held include Club Avenues of Service and Events Chair, Board member, Club President, Assistant Governor, District Trainer for several years, and three years as the Senior Assistant Governor, Youth Services for District 5280. She has also chaired both the 2019 District Club Assembly and District Conference. Her current District position is the Senior Assistant Governor, Education and Training, as well as District Governor. Bette has been very involved in developing and providing training for the Youth Protection Program and if asked to select an area she is most passionate about in Rotary, the answer has to be our Youth Programs. In 2017 Bette was one of two members who received the Rotarian of the Year award for District 5280, the other being none other than Past District Governor Melody St. John. She is very honored to be selected as District 5280 Governor, 2020-21.
Originally from London, England, Bette is a long-time resident of the West San Fernando Valley, and retired a few years ago from a long and varied career in Human Resources after holding positions such as Director and Vice President of Human Resources for large, multi-state/International companies, prior to running her own HR consulting company.

An Update on Malibu's Community Assistancee Resource Team

By providing much needed basic services and needs, the Malibu Community Assistancee Resource Team (CART) develops relationships and trust with the Malibu homeless population. By being able to partner with organizations they are able to address these basic needs and support these individuals on their journeys to great independence. The next regular public Zoom meeting of the Malibu Rotary Club will be a Zoom virtual meeting on line Wednsday, September 23 at noon. The meeting will feature Malibu Mayor Mikke Pierson & Malibu City Fire Saftely Liason Jerry Vandermeulen asking the question Are You Ready for the Fire Season. They will be talking about the The Multifaceted Boys & GIrls Club Malibu. The mission of Boys & Girls Club of Malibu is to significantly enhance the lives of all youth to fulfill their potential as caring, productive, contributing citizens. In recent years the club has expanded its outreach and services to adults in need as well as youth. The club has been invaluable in helping serve those affected by the Woolsey Fire and the pandemic. |

Update on People Mover Project at LAX

The Automated People Mover (APM) is an electric train system on a 2.25 mile elevated guideway with six stations total – three inside the Central Terminal Area (CTA) and three Outside. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) broke ground on the APM project in March of 2019 and anticipates that the system will be operational in 2023. The APM trains, elevators, escalators and moving sidewalks provide for quick access to the terminals and stations. Passengers will be able to view real-time flight information, public art in a varietym of edia, and will see the iconic Theme Building from a brand new perspective as the train enters the CTA. In addition to reducing traffic, the APM will leverage cutting-edge sustainability practices to reduce the airport area’s carbon footprint. The system’s fleet will consist of 44 cars that are fully electric, 98% recyclable and generate a portion of their own power through regenerative braking, while providing an industry-leading ride quality for users.

Update on Malibu CERT

The CERT program was developed in 1985 by the Los Angeles City Fire Department to provide basic training in safety and lifesaving skills to the general public. It has since been adopted and enhanced by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the National Fire Academy. The course is now recognized nationwide, and over 50,000 citizens have been trained to date. MISSION STATEMENT The purpose of Malibu CERT is to assist the City, as needed, with emergency disaster response in Malibu and the surrounding communities, and to promote disaster preparedness to all residents. |
