Paul Harris Fellowship

Mike explained how this Fellowship got its name and how the recipients represent dedication to the principles of Rotary.  He said it was his honour to present the Fellowship to his wife's grandmother, Iris Webb.
 
In June of 1950 Iris, 25 years old, the mother of a 2 yr. old and the wife of a farmer and active outdoorsman, was stricken with polio.  After 7 months in hospital she picked up her life again, displaying perserverance, optimism, courage and dedication.  She had 3 more children and was deeply involved in all their activities, making her children's friends welcome at the house, cheering on their hockey and baseball teams whether at home or away - even getting kicked out of Maple Leaf Gardens on one occasion for the intensity of her support.  She was active in Eastern Star and the Women's Institute, pursued athletics such as swimming and canoeing and worked both inside and outside the house to promote a commitment to the goals of world peace and greater understanding.  She is referred to in her family as 'big' grandma and Mike commended her for her bigness of spirit and courage and commitment.
Iris was unable to say much more than thanks but it was apparent that she was pleased and honoured by the recognition.
