Community Service Awards
Two weeks ago Fred Hacker presented the first annual John Gibson Community Service Award to Michelle Mink. He spoke of her long history of many efforts on the part and especially of the work she has done with the Terry Fox Run. She accepted the award on behalf of all of those who'd worked with her and who'd made it the success it was.
This week, the Vocational Service Committee presented its Award to a member of the local business community who conducted their business in a way that reflected the principles of Rotary. Yvonne was pleased to announce that Kathy Stewart, who had been running the Small Set Co-operative Nursery fro 25 years, since she and Debbie Bonthron had first conceived of it, was this year's recipient.
Yvonne's kids had attended and she had seen first hand Kathy's dedication, cheerfulness, enthusiasm and her ability to teach our youngest citizens manners and respect for others. Enlisting assistance from parents, teachers, parenting class students, co-op students and volunteers, she has maintained the school as a happy and productive institution.
Kathy expressed her thanks to the Club for the honour. She said the school was strong because of the families who believe in the students, who bring their great gifts to the operation. She hoped that 25 years of sandbox and sharing would contribute a little to the community. She said so many had contributed to the school's success and she had made so many friends that it was a pleasure for her to thank them all and to thank the Rotary Club for its work in the community.
