Atlantic Challenge

Fred Hacker said that if we thought we were in for a trip to Israel with his slides, we were not alone. His expectation had been to present that very thing, especially after Ralph had reminded him last week, put in on his Board and then left town. However Bob and Greg were here to tell us about the Challenge - the boats and the event.
He and Barb are grateful to the Challenge because their daughter, who had competed in the first event in Midland, suffered a serious car accident soon after and her physical fitness played a large role in her recovery.
We saw a brief video of the International Challenge in Wales in 2004. The first contest was between France and the US in 1986 and the name derived from the body of water that divides those two. The UK joined and competed in Brest in 1992. Now 13 countries are expected in Midland next year - July 24 - 31. The last time it was in Canada was 1994 and the contest runs every two years.
Atlantic Challenge is an experiential education program that encourages the sharing of skills, encourages personal development and community building, promotes a spirit of adventure and international understanding and tries to educate participants about our maritime heritage.
Vitalite was built at Discovery Harbour in 1991 and is now at BayPort. They do evening and weekend trips and boat repair.
The Challenge comprises 16 crews competing in 12 events over 8 days. 320 will participate and there will be about 500 supporters and staff. The Town is working with the organizers. Meals will be served at the NSSRC. There will be a parade and a Marquis Tent at the Waterfront for evening events and mingling. The primary purpose of the daily events is to tire the kids out. Most events will be visible from the waterfront.
The 2010 Committee has 7 sub committees and there are still places for volunteers. Midland Rotary has helped the Challenge team in the past. It supported the building of the first boat and recruitment and individual members have offered support. The Committee is hoping to recruit more students, especially from other Provinces. All ages are welcome to participate but there is a limit to how many over 21 can be on the boat. The youths are here all July camping and taking overnight trips on the boat and training. They are unplugged from their technology.
