Back To School Fair
The Rotary Club of East Providence/Seekonk is a proud sponsor of the Back to School Fair which is organized for East Providence elementary students and brought to you by BridgePointe Christian Church.  This year, more than 2,000 people attended with over 150 volunteers.  In addition to giving each student who came through the doors a backpack (that they got to pick), they were given all the school supplies they needed because their homeroom teachers were asked to give their list to the church who then went out and made sure they had enough for everyone.  There was available a pancake breakfast, eye examines, haircuts, dental checks as well as mini golf, bouncy houses and face painting.  Our Rotary Club is proud to be apart of this amazing program.

After several days of oppressive heat and humidity, the weather finally broke for the annual East Providence-Seekonk Rotary/SEEKONK Lions golf tournament.  As in the last several years, the tournament was held at the Wannamoisett Country Club.  This year’s tournament saw fewer golfers, but those who did take part enjoyed the beautiful weather and the lunch and sumptuous meal held after the tournament ended.

The February 13, 2017 meeting was a joint meeting with the Providence Rotary Club.  The Guest Speaker was RID Dean Rohrs, who will assume the role of Rotary International Vice President on July 1, 2017.
Representing East Providence/Seekonk were:  David Kent, Steve Propatier, Tom Foley, Judy Silva, Helen Siravo. and Valerie Perry.
The Guest Speaker, Dean Rohrs, was born in South Africa and then immigrated to Canada.  She said today's Rotary is quite different from the Rotary she joined 26 years ago.  She said clubs should take advantage of the flexibility that Rotary International has offered in order to grow membership, which is critical in North America.  Because of declining membership, this part of the world has lost two zones, where the areas in other parts of the world, such as India and Africa, are growing rapidly.

The Guest Speaker for January 9, 20178 was John Aubin, Town Planner of Seekonk, MA.  John spoke about what he had found  out about Rotary, surprising some with his research.
John has been with the Town of Seekonk as Planner since June 2015.  Prior to that he was the Town Planner in Cumberland, RI, and prior to that, the Town Planner in North Kingstown, RI.  He has also served on Zoning Boards, giving him vast experience in the public sector.  He is a Graduate of Hendriken, URI, Law School in Vermont.  After he came back to RI, he worked for an Attorney in Private Practice.  He also worked in to Houses of State - in Vermont doing legislative research as a law clerk, and prior to that, at the Rhode Island State House as a Paige.
John spoke about some plans going on in Seekonk, such as a Fed Ex complex going in at the former driving range on Route 6.  It will be a 250,000 sq. ft. facility with automated loading for the trucks, which will load and leave the site for deliveries.  It will result in between 150-175 jobs within the facility, which does not include the drivers.

The Boys and Girls Club Christmas Party was held on December 16, 2016 at the Boys and Girls Club.  Gifts were purchased by Rotarians and wrapped and brought to the club that night.  The East Providence Lions Club partnered with our club by providing pizza, beverages, and even arranged to have Santa there!  The children were very excited and the smiles on the faces made the night a delightful one for all who attended.  For a preview of all pictures, please click on the tab "Photo Albums" at the top of the page.

Today's Guest Speakers were Joyce Marabello, representing Tap-In, and Larry Hindle, representing Doorways.
TAPIN was started 32 years ago, and services East Providence, Barrington, Warren and Bristol.  Clients need to provide a current address and photo ID, and can come once per month for food.  Four Town Farms and McCoy Garden provide food.  Joyce also mentioned that they take donations from private gardens also.  She said Thanksgiving baskets were just given out and 269 bags (68% of the total baskets) were given to East Providence residents.
TAPIN also provides household goods and a limited amount of furniture.
Joyce mentioned that they provide rides, free of charge, to doctor appointments.  She said they are in dire need of drivers, and asks if anyone is looking for volunteer work, to contact her.
For further information, visit

Doorways was founded 15 years ago, and is located in the North School in Seekonk.  Larry Hindle has been on the board for approximately 10-12 years.  Unlike TAPIN, Doorways is food only.  The food comes from the food bank and food drives from the Post Office, schools, boy scouts, churches, etc.  Larry said a yearly mailing brings in an enourmous amount of money that provides most of the funding.
Doorways is made up of over 100 volunteers, who work in teams, and work once every 8 weeks.  They help to stock the shelves, gather the food, and provide operational support to the food pantry.  Clients are residents of Seekonk who apply through the Seekonk Human Services Department.  Once they are deemed eligible, they may get food weekly.  Shopping carts are provided, and the volunteers assist the clients in choosing the food.  There are also volunteers who deliver food to shut-ins on a weekly basis.

Each year, our Rotary Club designates a meeting as a "Million Dollar Meal".  The concept was developed by the Stoughton Rotary Club in 1959 as a way to give to the Rotary Foundation.  Our East Providence/Seekonk Rotary Club holds our Mlllion Dollar Meal twice a year, hosted by a local business, which includes a tour of the facility.  The cost of the meal is built into the dues, which is earmarked for The Rotary Foundation.  Usually Rotarians are asked to bring their own bag lunch.
The Million Dollar Meal held Monday, October 17, 2016, was held at the new University Medicine building on Wampanoag Trail.  Our host was Jennifer Hyde, Senior Administrator at University Medicine, who not only provided us with a tour, but also provided a delicious lunch, compliments of University Medicine.
The facility is beautiful and such a welcome addition to the City of East Providence.

Once again, the East Providence/Seekonk Rotary Club partnered with the Bridgepoint Christian Church for a Backpack fair at the East Providence High School.
Supplies lists for each grade at all of the public elementary schools in East Providence were provided by the School Department.  With donated funds, the supplies were purchased and distributed to over 800 elementary students from East Providence.  In addition to the loaded backpacks, local hairdresser volunteers provided 175 haircuts.  The event was well organized and ran smoothly, with an Assistant Superintendent and several teachers, as well as several Rotary volunteers helping out.

June 28, 2016 was a significant date for the East Providence/Seekonk Rotary Club.  It was on that date 70 years ago (June 28, 1946) that the East Providence Rotary Club was Chartered.  It was decided to combine the Anniversary with the Installation of Officers and induction of new member Jennifer Hyde.  But the highlight of the evening was a special tribute to long-time member Bill Donnelly.  The Metacomet Country Club in East Providence was the setting, with Past District Governor Joe Clancy as the emcee, and District Governor Kristine David as the Installing Officer.
Several of Bill Donnelly's family and friends attended the event.  Unfortunately, Bill did not attend as he was hospitalized on the morning of the event, but at his insistence, his wife Ella (who is an Honorary member of the club) and two of his daughters attended.  It was a fitting tribute to a fine gentleman and a proud Rotarian.
