Seeing an elderly Tibetan woman weep with joy when cataract surgery restored her vision after 10 years is the kind of moment Dave Razo will never tire of.
For several summers Razo, a member of the Rotary Club of Warner Robins, Georgia, USA, traveled to rural northwest China with a team from Georgia-based nonprofit Gansu Inc., to provide free sight-restoring cataract surgery to some of the country's poorest residents. In 2012, after 22 years and 6,000 successful procedures, Gansu's founder, ophthalmologist William Conrad, retired and discontinued the organization's operations.

During October, Rotarians are encouraged to focus on this important avenue of Rotary service. The Rotary Club of Warrnambool will continue its focus on careers in science, engineering and medicine with a workplace visit to the Deakin University School of Medicine Warrnambool Clinical School, based at South-west Health Care. Rotarians will be introduced to the latest simulation techniques to the clinical training of medical students
President Marie opened the meeting and welcomed Rotarians and guests, and encouraged everyone to enter the fund raising silent auction for the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund.
Doug Maclean reported that the involvement of our Club went very smoothly with 32 members participating, including Astrid. In addition, 4 members of Rotaract as well as Friends of Rotary, Sandra Miller and Roy Slater supported the activity. A total of 140+ hours was undertaken by members over the two days and Rotary will receive $17 per hour. Monies collected totalled approximately $34,000. Thank you to all involved.
Richard Hawker thanked everyone for coming and making the evening a special one. He said the evening’s program was planned to bring awareness about mental health and to learn about the role that the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund (ARHRF) plays – To Shine a Light on Mental llness. Richard said that everyone present would most likely know of someone who is or was affected by mental illness – maybe depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, anorexia, or one of the many other serious conditions. One person in 5 is affected by mental illness. Tonight's aim was to raise money for the ARHRF and to do that everyone was asked to participate in the auctions (silent and not so silent). Special thanks go to the generous donors – Gordon Curran, Betty Nisbet, Anne Adams, Ron Rauert, Eric Williams, Keith Mcleod, and the Good Guys, and to Rachel and Astrid for judging the hats and distributing the prizes. President Marie thanked Richard, Keith, Astrid, Rachel and anyone else who helped in the preparation.
Unfortunately our guest speaker Isobelle Collins was unable to attend the meeting due to a death in her family.
