ANZAC Day

Lest We Forget

President Michael and Secretary Sharon attended the ANZAC Day service on behalf of the Club.
Meeting 23 April 2019

President Michael Boyd welcomed all present.

Next Tuesday there is no meeting, it has been moved to Breakfast on Thursday May 2, 6.45 am for breakfast at the Mid City Motel, 525 Raglan Parade. If you intend to go go and weren't at Tuesday's meeting, please let Michael Boyd know so he can advise of numbers for catering purposes.  Cost is $25 which include a donation to Australian Rotary Health.

  • Thanks Delia for hosting us last week and for our chefs for the night. Useful meeting to get more familiar with Clubrunner and great to see some innovative programs being run by Brauer College.
  • Tonight’s program promises to be very interesting, a story about a past member of our Club Harold Balding, presented by our Club Historian Ian Sharman. Please listen closely as our Vocational Service Committee has a recommendation about a scholarship relating to Harold Balding.
  • This week is ANZAC week and President Elect David will be at the dawn service and Michael Boyd will attend the 11am ceremony and lay a wreath on the Club’s behalf.
  • As promised last week there are three sheets being circulated tonight about coming events, please mark yes or no and provide the names of any guests at (a) District Assembly (great way to learn more about programs we are involved in), (b) May Race Breakfast meeting , (c) social trip to Portland (May 5).
  • Our Club has been approached to be actively involved with a mentoring program for a member of Ambulance Victoria who is stationed in Warrnambool. We are looking for a volunteer who will meet with this person monthly and involve them in our Rotary activities in the next 12 months. There are many suitable people in our Club, please see Michael later if you can help.
  • Raffle books for Youth Exchange raffle to be returned by District Assembly, if you have any.
  • Warrnambool Student Wellbeing Association has invited us to send a representative to their AGM on Monday May 6th at SW TAFE. There will also be a formal farewell to Julie Burch who has been involved for 24 years. See Michael if you can attend.
  • Michael met with representatives from the other three Warrnambool Clubs and Assistant Governor John Clue, last Thursday. It was agreed to work towards a special Rotary Day in the week before the Folk Festival, highlighting the impact of Rotary in the community. There is a lot more planning to be done, but we will be highlighting our achievements over the last 90 years and encouraging more people to get involved in Rotary.
  • Rachel, Glenn Sharon and Michael had a great night at the final dinner at RYLA last Wednesday. 38 RYLARIANs completed the week and our two nominees Courtney and Harry will be back soon to tell us about it.
  • Board will consider whether to drop the invocation and loyal toast and discuss what, if anything might replace it at our next meeting on 7 May. Please give your feedback to Board members.
Fines
John Hunt fined Club members for the following infringements: departure tax, Carlton supporters, golf enthusiasts, free tickets to the races and indulgence of Easter eggs.

Robbie's Swindle
Andrea had the opportunity of winning but only managed to pull out the 4 of diamonds.
Keith will be running the swindle while Robbie is away getting a tan in Hawaii.

President Michael's Thought for the Week
We can do anything, but we can’t do everything…. at least not at the same time.

The Harold Methuen Balding Story

Harold Methuen Balding was a member of our Rotary Club, and subsequently enlisted to fight for his country during World War 2. He never returned home and his remains or the location of his grave have never been found. He died in North Borneo on 3 April, 1945.
Harold was born in Boort on 13 December, 1899. He was the son of Albert and Millicent Balding. He was married to Beatrix and they had 3 children. Of these, only his son, John Balding, is still alive today. His children were teenagers when he was sent overseas to fight the Japanese.
Harold Balding joined our Club in April, 1935. He was a baker and his bakery was on the corner of Fairy and Koroit Streets, diagonally opposite Ron Rauert’s shoe store. He became Club Secretary in 1936 and continued to hold this position in the Club until he enlisted in the Australian Infantry Forces in July, 1940. Harold was Club Secretary and Ivor Ryan was Club President, and they both decided to enlist at the same time. They both offered their resignations from the Club because they were enlisting and would obviously not be able to continue attending Rotary meetings, but their resignations were not accepted. By that time, Rotary International had introduced a new type of Rotary war service leave which would enable Rotarians to retain Rotary membership without having to attend Rotary Club meetings whilst they were serving their countries.

A Membership Moment

The principle of diversity has been central to Rotary since its inception. Originally its focus was vocations; clubs were required to have members reflecting the diversity of occupations within their communities. More recently the focus of diversity has expanded – to include gender, age, ethnicity, faith, ability and sexual orientation. To underscore the importance of diversity, the Board of Rotary International recently adopted a formal Diversity, Equity and Inclusion policy. That policy clearly recognises that the organisation and its clubs must take action to ensure Rotary is more reflective of the communities it serves.

A more diverse membership is critical to Rotary’s future success. Members with different backgrounds and viewpoints give clubs a broader understanding of the community and its needs, and better equip clubs to find solutions. However diversity needs to be matched with a culture of inclusiveness – to ensure that differences are respected and valued, and members feel like they belong in Rotary.
