Sergeant at Arms Andrea Sampson had more tales about Exchange Student Fabio's busy social life and what an angel he is to host, but now it is back to school this week for both of them. Andrea introduced President John Hunt who welcomed members and guests Ivan Baker, Margaret Ross and Andrew Suggett and congratulated Keith McLeod on receiving a Local Achievers Award at the Warrnambool Australia Day Ceremony.
President John mentioned that he had had a busy week celebrating birthdays - his mother's 90th and his own 60th (is he really that old?). Everyone rose to their feet and sang Happy Birthday.
President John saved members the pain of being fined by contributing a BIG fine to cover everyone's misdemeanours. Thank you John.
Rotarian Andrew Suggett, Chairman of the Rotary House Committee, brought to our meeting the Community Event of the Year Certificate, presented to him on Australia Day - a thank you to the Warrnambool Rotary Clubs on the completion of Rotary House. Andrew thanked Judy Ross, Doug Maclean, Tony Austin and Mal Price who were part of the Rotary House Committee.
Tickets for the Peace Concert on March 6 will be available at the Lighthouse Theatre from 24th January - $30 concession for groups of 10 or more - the sooner the Club books, the better the seats. Support acts are Tom Richardson, Danny Spooner and The Mae Trio. Google them up and have a listen - they are all great acts. Let Judy Ross know if you want a ticket because seats are limited to only 160.

Port Fairy Folk Festival is not far off (7-10 March) Roy Slater asked Rotarians to put their names down on the roster for two 5 hour shifts. Our Club works on Stage 1 with two people at the door and four in the tent. Arm bands can be collected at the ticket exchange near the swimming pool. When your shift is finished you are free to roam and attend other events. Names needed by February 14. Roy said our Club could earn $4,000 by supporting this event.

Rotary Convention - June 1st - 4th Sydney 2014 - Message from PDG Marilyn Mercer
A call for volunteers for the convention has come via PDG Cathy Roth. I am hoping that you will be able to spend a couple of hours as a Host Organising Committee Volunteer for the Rotary International Convention 2014 to be held at Olympic Park between May 28 and June 4. Volunteers will be needed before, during and after the convention.
Some say that "one only really knows Rotary after participating in such a Convention". We hope to have 700 volunteers. The more we have the lighter the load for everyone. You, your family and friends do not need to be a paying delegate for the Convention to volunteer. However, volunteers wishing to attend Convention sessions, the House of Friendship and HOC events will need to register and pay the Registration fee separately for the RI Convention. This is a great opportunity for everyone to become involved in a significant Rotary event. Volunteers will be needed at the Sydney Airports, railway stations, hotels and mainly at Olympic Park venues. President John Hunt interviewed Rotarian Tony Austin. We learned that when Tony retired from the Education Department (his last position being at the now defunct ATC) his workload did not become any less. He has worked in an engineering workshop for 7 months and as a concreter's labourer for 5 months on the last stage of the hospital redevelopment. Tony said during this time his fitness and strength improved and that he enjoyed the work.
In Tony's "spare time" he likes to work on old cars and engines. Tony said he has an old car, from which he is about to take out the petrol engine and replace it with a diesel engine. Tony will be running this car on his own home made diesel (bio-diesel) which is based on converting waste vegetable oil. Jaguars are his obsession and Tony has two on the road and an E-Type he is doing up. He is collecting parts so that he can convert the E-Type from left hand drive to right hand drive.
Tony buys second hand machinery which he repairs and re-sells on E-bay. He had one big win when he bought some machinery in Hamilton. Among the extra bits and pieces that were "thrown in" was a tool post grinder which he subsequently sold for $1,200.
Tony is also a gold prospector and has used a pan, metal detector and used to dredge. Tony mostly uses the metal detector now around Stawell. He brought along around 2 ounces of gold he has found over time and passed this around in a jar for everyone to see. It is currently worth around $2,500 - and we were allowed to handle it!!
2 and a half pints cold water, 13 oz can of pure flake lye, 6 lb clean fat (tallow or lard). Slowly pour the lye into the water in a Pyrex, iron or enamel vessel. (Caution: lye is caustic do not spill on clothes or hands). Melt fat, pour in the lye solution stirring slowly then pour into moulds.
