MEETING 5 FEBRUARY 2019
Rotary Report Tuesday Feb 5th, 2019

Welcome – Sergeant Ian welcomed everyone (and apologised for a late start to the meeting).

President Michael welcomed everyone and our only guest tonight was our Exchange student Janick.

Meeting Introduction
This week we have our Service Committee meetings, so please make sure you are sitting with others on your committee. These meetings are important opportunities for you to have input into decisions in your group on behalf of the Club and to understand what is coming up and how you can get involved.

Last week’s meeting was clearly the John Beks show, thank you John for organising a great night for us and preparing such an interesting story about your life and the immigration of your family to Australia.

As I mentioned before Christmas, the Warrnambool City Council has agreed to provide the materials for a post and rail fence at Ted King Park. I am pleased to say that Dallas Armistead has agreed to be our foreman for the job and we will involve club members, friends, Clontarf Academy students, ski and rowing club members and local residents in constructing the fence probably during March and April. Information on each table.

Still a need for help with the Homeless project (Daybreak) for two more weeks. Talk to Trevor if you can help between 3pm and 6pm Sundays.

Rotaract re-establishment meeting was held at the Seanchi – we had three new potential members attending and will have another meeting on 28th February. We are aiming for 15 – 20 members.

A reminder for all who present a report to our meeting, please give your notes to our meeting reporter. This will ensure the detail you want to convey is accurately reported in the Bulletin.

Our Club has received and invitation from Lu Butler, Manager of Warrnambool and District Hospice to attend a meeting designed to plan for Warrnambool to become a more integrated compassionate community to increase the well-being of people at the end of life. Meeting was held at City Memorial on Feb 6th 11am – 1pm.

Members Announcements

Terry – Car Raffle – We sold 2891 out of our 3000 tickets. This was a total of $5810.40 (which included $28.40 donations). We paid 25% to Ballarat Rotary Club so we cleared $4654. This was a fantastic effort and many thanks to all those who helped out with the sales of the tickets.

Trevor – Relay-4-Life – Is this weekend. We are not running a BBQ this year however the Club will make a donation. We will have a social gathering Friday night from 6 – 9pm. The opening ceremony is at 6.30pm. BYO Alcohol and food. We will have a marquee and please wear your Rotary attire – Shirt, hat, jacket etc. Many thanks to all those who have volunteered for the set up and pack up of marquees or volunteered to man the gate and direct traffic.

Glen – Dinner Auction – Thank you to the many people that attended the 5pm meeting. At next week’s meeting we will provide a list of donors for Club members to check. If there are any new businesses or donors, we need to know about please bring along the details. We plan to have the list finalised by Feb 22nd. Members will receive their packs on March 26th.

Delia – Blue Lotus Garden outing – Struggling to find a suitable weekend. Can all those wishing to attend please fill in the sheet going around to indicate the weekends you are available. Delia will collate and give feedback at next week’s meeting.

Fines – A big thank you to our fines master this week – Ian Cairns. Ian announced, to make it clear to all members, that you may get fined for more than one thing, but you only need to make one financial contribution to the fines for that week.

Robbie’s Swindle – Janick won $9

Next week – Guest is Colleen Bolte (Amnesty International) speaking about International Conflict Resolution.

Michael’s thought for the week – One of the hardest lessons in life is figuring out which bridges to cross and which to burn.

A MEMBERSHIP MOMENT
Eliza Turton is a 18 years old ‘emerging professional’ and is joining one of the Rotary Clubs on the Gold Coast. Eliza is a Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship awardee at QUT (Queensland University of Technology) doing a fulltime Bachelor of Dance Performance. Eliza currently works on a casual basis with UP Agency doing promotional work mainly, but not only, at Westfield shopping centres.
Recently Eliza was an elf at a kids’ Christmas brekkie and the week before a snow princess. She was one of the lead dancers with the Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols in Brisbane. Eliza is a regular volunteer at Rotary events, in the food van, serving drinks and sizzling sausages, planting trees and feels people her age have an idea on how many doors can be opened via Rotary and the fun.”
Eliza wrote these notes in the passenger seat of the car – she was on a stream of thought that she had to get out. Eliza named her jottings,

‘ROTARY MEMBERSHIP IDEAS’

Have a ‘Join Rotary’ sign at markets ·
Host an Information Night about membership so people are aware they can join and get a head start ·
They are always more likely to join if there is a specific event about it ·
For younger members – maybe have a different, specific night.
Have a few guest speakers who younger people are interested in, but get speakers that attract the right crowd ·
Make sure they are aware that they don’t have to attend every meeting, but say they have to attend a few, otherwise they never will ·
Younger people are good at different roles to the oldies, they can contribute with technological help ·
If you get bright persons, they will be good at selling tickets, might even have access to more events with different crowds ·
People of a young age naturally gravitate to those of their own age ·
Make sure they are aware of how significant Rotary is, how many doors it opens to places, industries and industries leaders ·
If they know that it will help them and be good on their resume, they will come, the fact that it helps the industry is a plus ·
Most millennials will be willing to work a good few hours if they get a free sausage-lunch, especially if they can listen to groovy music during it!

Worth some thought.

LONG LUNCH
Rotary club of Warrnambool Daybreak

Dear Patron,

ROTARY CLUB OF WARRNAMBOOL DAYBREAK LONG LUNCH FUNDRAISING EVENT
24 FEBRUARY 2019 AT BROTHER FOX @ DEAKIN - 12:00PM

Our Rotary club has been fundraising for the local community for 20 years.

One of our major events for the year is our annual "Long Lunch". This year funds raised from the event
will be donated to the Warrnambool Special Development School and South West Healthcare.

The Rotary Club of Warrnambool Daybreak has committed to providing support to Warrnambool
Special Development School
to assist with the purchase of playground equipment.

The Special Development School caters for 160 students (aged between 5 and 18) who have met the
eligibility criteria for enrolment by having an lQ of below 70.

The School is the only Special School in the area and services a 50km radial area from Warrnambool
with a population of approximately 35,000 residents. A home to school bus service transports our
students between home and school.

The building of the School has caught the attention and imagination of the public as a whole, being the
first brand new Government School to be built on a new site in the Warrnambool area since Brauer
College (Warrnambool Technical School) was built some 46 years ago.

Our Rotary Club sees the great need for those with intellectual and physical disabilities to have access
to other facilities and playground equipment, but funding for this needs to be raised by our community.

Our club is also pleased to provide support to South West Healthcare.

South West Healthcare's current appeal is aimed at raising $150,000 to buy a desperately-needed
(and otherwise unaffordable) second lmage lntensifier (X-ray Machine) for the Warrnambool operating
theatres.

Only having the one lmage lntensifier impacts when, for example, more than one person needs surgery
following a car accident. This is a significant need. Any person in our region could be affected by this
need - which makes it a great cause to support.

We invite you to join us in supporting these great projects in our community which again exemplifies our
strong support for volunteering, service above self, and most of all, our willingness to support our
community

ln the words of Vicki Jellie (Australia's Local Hero tor 2017), "it is looking after our own community".
We trust you will help us to do this by supporting our Long Lunch event in any way you can.

Kind Regards,

lan Harper
Service Director
