Combating illiteracy has been a focus of Rotary International since 1986 - and for good reason. UNESCO estimates there are 862 million illiterate adults in the world and about two thirds of them are women. Millions more are functionally illiterate, without the reading and writing skills necessary for everyday life. The United Nations has identified illiteracy as a major obstacle to economic, political, and social development.

President John Hunt welcomed everyone to the meeting. During the week John bumped into Eric Williams who has quite a few stitches on his face. He also swam from Sorrento to Portsea in his last ocean swim this year, and not because a fish bigger than John swam under him! The Peace Concert was a great success and singer Judy Ross was congratulated for her performance on stage. The Mae Trio who performed at the concert won the best first year act at the Folkie.

Judy Ross provided an update on John who had a fall last week and was taken to Melbourne, where he was fitted with a pacemaker. John is now back in the Base Hospital Warrnambool for the remainder of his recovery period. He is not yet up to having visitors and Judy will let us know when he is.  Thankfully John had an alarm button when he had the fall and was able to get help quickly.

 

A dinner is to be held at the Warrnambool Bowls Club on Friday 21st March 2014 and they would like to invite local Rotarians and partners to join them on the evening for the dinner and to enjoy some inter-district fellowship. The cost is $30 per person for a 2 course meal and drinks at bar prices. If you wish to attend, please let Rachel or Judy know by 14 March and money to be paid to Rachel or Judy asap. If someone indicates they will attend and then do not turn up, they will still be expected to pay, as final numbers once given to the Bowls Club cannot be altered.

 

On the weekend of 11-13 April the Rotary Youth Program for Enrichment (RYPEN) will be held at Adekate Lodge Camp, Creswick and Noorla Yo Long Camp, Southend.

This program is for students aged between 14 and 17 years and is designed to develop leadership, decision making, networking and community service skills in the students that attend. The program is aimed at students who may not be in leadership positions, but who exhibit the qualities of compassion, concern and commitment to community wellbeing. These are often quiet achievers who never stand in the limelight, but are steadfast, reliable young students who are loyal and supportive of friends and peers.

RYPEN aims to deliver to these students increased motivation and improved life skills; better self image and self pride; an understanding of setting and achieving goals; and the confidence to overcome failure and take control of their future.

At District Conference each year the Youth Exchange Inbound and Rebound students raise money through a raffle for a charity of their choice.

This year the monies raised are going towards the construction of an accommodation facility at the Noorla Yo Long Camp where RYPEN takes place.

The student's theme is "Another Brick in the Wall" taken from the famous Pink Floyd song. The students will have a large brick wall displayed on a board and they will be asking for $5 per brick.

Terry is unsure what the lucky brick prize is, however in the two weeks prior to Conference, Fabio will be asking club members to take part in this fund raiser and as a bonus to the District Conference prize, we will have a Club prize as well, which will be displayed when ticket sales commence. The Club prize will be drawn on the 8th April prior to the Conference.

Fabio will keep a record of all who purchase a brick and their name will be placed at random on the brick wall at Conference.

Students last year raised $1,000 at Conference, so please help Fabio get the fundraiser off to a great start.

Being Treasurer of the Youth Exchange Committee, any monies raised by Fabio prior to the Conference will go straight into the Youth Exchange District Account.

Finesmaster Trevor Williams managed to fine just about everyone in the Club on Tuesday night, some of which were:  members not wearing name badges, John Hunt's big fish was a Great White Shark, Marie Bennett for not turning up to a club meeting on her birthday, Janet Blackley for having her photo in the Standard Newspaper, those who didn't attend the Folkie, Mary Fitzgerald was accused of touching blokes on the (censored) at the Folkie, Robert Cuzens for being in the bowls grand final, and many others.....

Jim Hanrahan won the tidy sum of $3.00. Well done Jim.

The Chair of the 2014 Dinner Auction Committee, Marie Bennett introduced members of the Committee: Ian Cairns, Rachel Furnel, Roy Slater, Tony Austin, Michael Boyd, Judy Ross, Rob McNally, Ian Sadler and Sharon Stark.

The importance of the Annual Dinner Auction was emphasised as the Club's major fund raiser for the year. Without this event, the Club would not have sufficient funds to support projects. It is hoped to raise in excess of $20,000 this year - $30,000 is not out of reach if everyone pitches in and helps.

 

 

Last year's meal at the Warrnambool Bowls Club was not a success and it has been agreed that over the years we have been placing stress on venues in an effort to keep the price down, i.e. in 1998 the cost was $25 per head and 15 years later the cost remains the same. As a result the cost has risen to $30 this year and the Warrnambool Bowls Club has promised to make amends for last year's slip up. The reason for choosing the Warrnambool Bowls Club was because of the unavailability of other venues and committee members on preferred dates.

To soften brittle nails, rub them well with a cloth moistened with a 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide and then rinse thoroughly with water.

 

16 parts of bees wax, 4 parts of colophony, 1 part of French turpentine. Gently melt and mix together, pour into a container and stir in 6 parts of French turpentine while it is still warm. It will cool down to a soft buttery consistency.

A guy goes into the confessional box, after years being away from the
Church. He pulls aside the curtain, enters and sits down. There's a fully
equipped bar with crystal glasses, the best vestry wine, Guinness on tap,
cigars and liqueur chocolates nearby, and on the wall a fine photographic
display of buxom ladies, who appear to have mislaid their garments.
He hears the priest coming and says "Father, forgive me, for it's been a
very long time since I've been to confession and I must admit that the
confessional box is much more inviting than it used to be".

The priest responds,
"Get out, you idiot. You're on my side!”
