During October, Rotarians are encouraged to focus on this important avenue of Rotary service. The Rotary Club of Warrnambool will continue its focus on careers in science, engineering and medicine with a workplace visit to the Deakin University School of Medicine Warrnambool Clinical School, based at South-west Health Care. Rotarians will be introduced to the latest simulation techniques to the clinical training of medical students
President Marie welcomed guests John and Margaret Stuckey and Exchange Student Astrid. She announced that the President Elect was Steve Giddens.
Following an introduction of John Stuckey by Sergeant at Arms Rachel Furnell, President Marie then inducted John into the Club and presented Margaret Stuckey with a bouquet of flowers.
The Chair, Rachel Furnell, introduced John Stuckey who was born in Ormond and is married to Margaret who was also present at the Club meeting. They have a son Gavin and daughter Gaye, 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, with one on the way shortly. John went to Ormond State School, then Oakleigh Technical School which is now a McDonalds. John did a plumbing apprenticeship at Oakleigh which he finished at RMIT. He then worked with Gas & Fuel Corporation as a gas fitter where he advanced to foreman. In 1959 he transferred to Traralgon where he stayed for 9 years, then transferred back to Melbourne as Senior technical instructor at the Gas & Fuel training school. Then in charge of all country branches which saw him move to Warrnambool in 1973. John started his own gas business under the name “John Stuckey Gas” which later became Barbeques Galore.
Margaret and John also started a frozen food business and a handicraft business which John admits were mainly Margaret’s handiwork. They still own Barbeques Galore in Warrnambool.
John joined the Warrnambool Rotary Club in May 1995 and was President in 2000/01. He was presented with a Paul Harris Fellow by the Warrnambool Rotary Club.
Margaret and John moved to Moama and transferred to the Echuca/Moama Rotary Club in 2006. He was installed as President in 2007/08. During this period John and Margaret did a lot of touring, particularly in the USA and Canada, taking advantage of the international travel and hosting fellowship and staying with dozens of Rotary families. They have had reciprocal visits from several of their hosts and many American and Canadian Rotarians remain close friends today.
They then moved to Shepparton and joined the Rotary Club of Shepparton South in 2010. Elected to the Board in 2012 chairing International.
In 2014 John moved to Rotary Club of Mooroopna but then decided to move back to Warrnambool last month.
President Marie Bennett inducted John to the Rotary Club of Warrnambool and Rotarians welcomed him back to the Club.
Coming up on Tuesday 28 October at 6 pm. Guest speaker will be Isabelle Collins who will talk about the Rotary Health Research Fund and speak about the issue of mental health. There will be prizes for the best hat and largest hat, finger food and lots of fun on the night. Proceeds raised will go towards research into helping those affected by depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and many other illnesses. Partners and guests are most welcome.

Doug Maclean advised that the roster has been finalised. Remember to sign the JSA when you arrive and bring along a hat, sunscreen and just to be safe, something warm to wear. BBQ for the South West Motorcycle Club's Rally - 1 November
Tony is running a BBQ for the local motorcycle club's rally on 1 November on the Civic Green. We’ve done this a couple of times and it’s a good money spinner and a good day. Please contact Tony Austin if you can help out. A Bunnings BBQ has also been arranged for January next year. Details to follow.

Rotary District Conference 20-22 March 2015

Rotarian Michael Boyd advised that the efficient functioning of the Club doesn't rely on the President, Secretary and Treasurer and that everyone plays a role in making the Club run. All members have some responsibility and that responsibility can be found listed on the dinner placemats and the roster in the weekly Bulletin. We all enjoy a well run meeting, a good guest speaker or program, an efficient check-in procedure, a well laid out meeting room, some fun and laughs during the meeting. This is also where we should be showcasing our Club to prospective members.
Michael focussed on a couple of aspects that all members will be responsible for at some time and these were Properties and Programs.
Properties:
Tony Austin provided members with a rundown on properties and in particular how to set up the room for meetings and how important it was that everything was in place for guest speakers, including the data show and laptop. Of note was how to obtain the key to the lecturn. The key is now located to the left of the store-room door and is in a key lock. To access the key the code is 6590. The correct microphone and lecturn set up was explained by Duncan Stalker who stressed the importance of not changing the current set-up on the control system within the lecturn and to locate the lecturn away from other speaker systems which could adversely affect the quality of sound.
Rotarians were reminded that if they were on the roster for any activity and were unable to make it, it is their responsibility to find a replacement. This has not been happening recently and some Rotarians are filling in for these duties time and time again.
Program Director:
Brian Trenery described the duties of theProgram Director and explained how the roster is compiled and the process for making contact with prospective speakers and those who have committed to a date. Rotarians were advised that from January to June, Brian was looking for suggestions to fill the roster.
Michael Boyd then ran a quick 5 minute quiz which revealed a few weak spots and the need of some homework! All the questions came from information on our web site and Rotarians were encouraged to visit the web site and familiarise themselves with its content.
