Four hours in a semi-basement, and the question it left us | 반지하에서 보낸 네 시간, 그리고 남은 질문

The main room of the semi-basement flat before and after the clean-up

A semi-basement flat in Seoul had sat full of belongings for two years. Seven of us cleared it in four hours with 주거복지연대 (Citizens for Decent Housing). Nobody will live there again, so what should it become?

약 2년 동안 짐으로 가득 차 있던 서울의 반지하 집을 주거복지연대와 함께 네 시간 만에 비웠습니다. 이제 아무도 살 수 없는 이 공간은 무엇이 되어야 할까요?

A house you earn: SHRC at Habitat’s Chuncheon build

On Saturday, 5 September, members of Seoul Hanmaum Rotary Club joined Habitat for Humanity Korea’s Korea Blitz Build in Chuncheon. What we got from it is a great example of what our Heart of Seoul campaign is trying to say: a home whose value comes from the hours a family puts into it.

From Listening to Action: Heart of Seoul Enters Its Partnership Phase

Our Heart of Seoul campaign has moved from listening to action. After 89 community members told us housing stability is Seoul's most urgent need, the club opened partnership talks with Habitat for Humanity Korea and is designing programs across four tracks: hands-on service, youth financial literacy, intergenerational mentorship, and community storytelling.

Heart of Seoul:

Help Shape a Better Seoul

< 아래에 한국어 버전이 있습니다 >

Seoul Hanmaum Rotary Club is proud to launch Heart of Seoul, a city-wide community listening campaign designed to better understand the most pressing social, environmental, and community challenges facing our city today.

We believe meaningful service begins by listening first.

Through this campaign, we invite residents, workers, students, families, and anyone connected to Seoul to share their perspectives on what issues need more attention — especially those that may be overlooked or “falling through the cracks.”

Your voice can help guide future long-term service projects and partnerships that create real impact.

Watch our campaign announcement:

Why Your Input Matters

Too often, organizations decide what communities need without first asking them.

Heart of Seoul takes a different approach.

Your responses will help us:

  • Identify Seoul’s most urgent unmet needs
  • Understand lived experiences and community concerns
  • Prioritize issues where focused action can make a real difference
  • Build thoughtful, sustainable service projects based on real voices

What Happens After the Survey?

After responses are collected, we will review the feedback, organize key themes, and share findings publicly.

Our club will then use this input to identify one priority area where we can make meaningful, long-term impact through partnerships, volunteering, advocacy, and sustained community support.

This is not a one-time survey — it is the first step in a longer journey.

ESTIMATED TIMELINE

April 30 – Campaign Launch

Heart of Seoul officially begins with our community launch gathering.

We will meet with organizations already doing meaningful work in that area to listen, learn, and explore collaboration.

Fall 2026 – Long-Term Action Begins

At Rotary Hanmaum Club, You Can Be Connected to the World

At Rotary Hanmaum Club, the world truly feels closer. At our August gathering, people from Kenya, Canada, England, the U.S., Japan, Spain, and beyond came together—leaders, writers, chefs, artists, and dreamers—all sharing their stories. Though different in background, we discovered how alike we are in spirit, laughter, and purpose. Rotary Hanmaum isn’t just a club—it’s a place where strangers become friends and the world feels like home.

One Heart, Many Stories

One Heart, Many Stories

On a summer afternoon in Yeonnam-dong, a small gallery filled with art became the birthplace of the Hanmaum Rotary Club. What began as the dream of an American real estate expert soon drew in friends from around the world, each united by a vision of connection and service. From that first gathering grew a community built on one heart—Hanmaum—where differences create harmony and strangers become family.
