RCO Meeting August 24, 2020 Rotary Club of Oakville Meeting of August 24, 2020 – via ZOOM The meeting was called to order by President Mike Henry at 7:00pm with a toast to Queen and Canada. The blessing was provided by Vivian Naidoo. Attendance: A total of 19 members signed into the zoom meeting and 9 guests. - Guests include members from RCOT: Bill Koopman, Vanda, Cliff Thompson, , Ray Jackson Tom Alton, Birgit Heather Donaldson, Bob Gardner.
- Other guests included: Hasan Bin Sohail, Indigenous Scholar earner Hailey Sutherland, Birgit Wartenberg of RC of Belleville

- Viv & Riona for offering to transport donations for Art for Aid and Six Nations Polytechnique.
- Birgit Wartenberg of RC of Belleville and Cliff Thompson of RCOT for help for collection and coordination of donations for Art for Aid
Riona needs help Friday before 10am to load up trucks for art For Aid. Kevin: Rotary Day of Giving Rotary residences on weekend of Sept. 12 or 13 Need 6 – 8 volunteers at each of Woodside - Yard work, Stewart St. check on residents and Normandy Place, plants/pots, w/ kids rocks and walks Riona (on behalf of Dana): Lebanon support: $1,000 from RCO, 10x matching for logistics for hospitals, Dana thanked Amin. Donations can be made via HPIC - https://www.hpicanada.ca/ Rudy: Zone28 – online summit Sept. 23 – 25, encourage all to attend to learn beyond District Rudy met incoming RI President Elect Shekhar Mehta from Calcutta Pakistan. All plans for next Rotary year are being planned in double, both virtual and in person George V: Fundraising Committee met: looking at new fundraising ideas, Objectives are to raise funds, increase exposure to Rotary, member engagement, member camaraderie. Happy Bucks & Fines (Frank Morewood): Happy Bucks included; - Frank: large red oak tree fell in neighbours yard, minimal damage, no one hurt, sadly Frank had the tree chopped up.
- Frank also happy to see Myra Hanna at our meeting
- Rudy: RI Nominee President 2022-2023 announced, it is Jennifer Jones of the Rotary Club of Windsor Roseland in Ontario
- Judy & Ken celebrated their 55th Wedding Anniversary in Muskoka ! Also their granddaughter got married this month, lovely outdoor wedding,
- Amin: twin daughters got jobs – one legal aid as lawyer, another a job in Britain
- George V: Rec’d confirmation of his initial 2 deposit notifications for his pension plan as he will be retired as of Sept. 1st
Fines: - What percent of Rotarians are females – 22%
- What year did first female formally apply to join a Rotary Club - 1978 in Duarte, Florida. 3 females applied to be members….. were denied.
- In 1987 ladies were finally allowed as Rotarians
Classification Talks: Vivian Naidoo - From South Africa, grew up in Durban, 2nd of 5 sons, met Riona in school
- His family is still in Durban area
- Viv showed pictures of South Africa: Rugby is a popular sport in South Africa, however Viv enjoyed playing beach volleyball and Cricket. Showed a picture of a Mutton Bunny w/ lamb
- Went to Johannesburg, which has similar status as Toronto for Canada; culturally diverse, lots of jobs, Viv worked for Pepsi and Clover.
- Viv switched careers from law to consumer packaged goods, he became “jack of all trades” in industry. In Consumer Packaged products Viv worked in Operations, Procurement, Sales, Key Accounts, and Strategic sales – which he enjoys most.
- Both Viv and Riona moved to Canada 2.5 yrs ago, looking for more opportunities and a change. They spent first year travelling in Canada and networking. Then each started their careers in Canada.
- Viv joined Rotary as he desires to leave the world a better place, he believes time is the most valuable resource. Rotary will also allow Viv to network which is important when you are new in a county. Rotary is a great way to meet new people.
Riona Naidu - Riona’s surname “Naidu” is original spelling of surname, from India, where as Viv’s surname “Naidoo” was likely changed when immigrants landed from India
- Riona’s current profession is creating marketing intelligence for clients
- Riona looks at data, analytics strategy. She is essentially a storyteller, trusted advisor, thought leader.
- Riona studied Environment, then worked in the field of Environment. This was followed by Consulting, > then Market Research > Spatial research, then Media Analytics, then with a Credit bureau > heading Marketing solutions. In Canada employed by PWC in Management Consulting in Marketing & Media Strategy
- Viv & Riona have two cats, one immigrated, one domestic
- Both love travel, food, to meet people. They both have done Polar Bear Dips on Jan. 1st a couple of times and plan to continue annually
- Why Rotary, Riona’s personal journey included volunteer water projects, sustaining projects in Ghana, hands on food projects, while at the credit union self sustaining projects in townships
- Upon joining PWC, attended a Chamber of Commerce event where she met Rotarians who shared about projects they were involved. This made Riona realize that Rotary seemed to link with what she has done volunteer wise in the past.
- Riona has enjoyed fellowship with in RCO, and also Rotarians she has met with other clubs
