Water First Drinking Water Internship Program

Sustainable access to safe, clean water in Indigenous communities continues to be an issue in Canada. Technology alone does not provide clean and reliable drinking water; the people who run the systems are critical. Many Indigenous communities in Canada have identified the need for more young, qualified, and local personnel to support solving water issues, independently and for the long term. However, there is a lack of locally available opportunities for young adults to gain the relevant skills and experiences.

The Water First Drinking Water Internship Program directly addresses this by supporting young Indigenous adults to become certified water treatment plant operators. The Internship is welcomed by Indigenous communities that view training and skill development as a key part of the solution to drinking water challenges. This approach ensures sustainable access to safe drinking water in Indigenous communities for the long term.

Water First is a registered Canadian charity that works alongside Indigenous communities to address water challenges through education, training and meaningful collaboration. Since 2009, Water First has collaborated with more than 80 Indigenous communities located in the lands now known as Canada while supporting Indigenous youth and young adults to pursue careers in water science. 

Ami Gopal has over 22 years experience and a proven track record in fundraising, resource development and marketing. Since joining the Water First in 2017, she has worked with many Rotary Clubs across Ontario. She enjoys nurturing relationships with Water First donors and developing customized strategies to meet their needs, along with sharing stories and increasing awareness about Water First’s work.
