Members, wives, and friends of the Bellaire/SW Houston Rotary Club presented a fashion show at the October 19 lunch meeting.  Everyone had a great time and the ladies did an outstanding job on the runway.
Area Membership Chair Carol Lester spoke to the Bellaire/SW Houston Club on October 12 about ways to boost membership.  As a member of the West University Club, she has seen their membership drive up to 150+.  We are grateful for her time and suggestions.

Come out on October 29th from 1:30 to 3:00 PM at the storage unit (5415 Bissonnet) and help maintain our flags.  We need to put in a little work on the flags before our Veteran's Day deployment.  Let's provide a quality product for our subscribers.  Flag subscriptions are a big part of our fundraising effort.  Helping with our flag program allows us to do more good in the community.
Rotarians from the Bellaire/SW Houston Club took time at the September 21 meeting to make bags of birthday party supplies to be distributed by the Food Bank.  Each bag had a different theme (Mickey Mouse, Princess, balloons, etc).  We even had an opportunity to express our creative side by decorating the bag.  A good time was had by all and we helped bring a little joy into someone's life.  A special thanks to Judy Harwell for organizing this event.
On September 9, the Bellaire/SW Houston Rotary Club honored their spouses at Grotto's Ristorante.  Over fifty Rotarians and their spouses enjoyed a delicious meal and fellowship.  All spouses were presented with a gift.  Our spouses make it possible for us to serve and many times serve along side us.  Thank you for your support dedication to making the world a better place.
The Rotarians of Bellaire/SW Houston visited Newman's Castle in Bellville on Saturday, August 19.  We took a bus up to the Castle and enjoyed touring the grounds and spending time together.  Everyone enjoyed a fantastic lunch before heading back to Houston.  Check out the pictures by Steve Magoon to see all the fun.
On July 4, the City of Bellaire had their annual parade and festival to celebrate Independence Day.  As usual, the Rotarians from Bellaire/SW Houston had watermelon available.  The club accepted donations to the Polio Plus Foundation from those who visited the booth.  The club will be able to make a donation of about $300 from the efforts of those who helped serve and those who were kind enough to donate.  Even in all of the heat, we were pretty cool!
We are saddened by the loss of former Bellaire/Southwest Rotarian, Dr. John Wright Freeman, who passed away in late July 2017.  He was a true Renaissance Man - a rocket scientist who won NASA's Medal for Scientific Achievement for his work on the Apollo missions, a physics and astronomy professor, author, triathlon athlete, designer/installer of solar water purification programs in Haiti, a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow, and the first head of the Masters of Liberal Studies program at Rice. He was born July 12, 1935 in Chicago and is survived by his wife of 60 years, Phyllis, daughter Laurie and husband Mark Hindman, son David and fiancée Michelle Bagwell, grandchildren Ryan, Alicia, Andrea and husband Thomas Johnson, and sister Carolyn Cook. In the obituary published by the Houston Chronicle, he is pictured wearing his Rotary pin. Services were held Saturday, July 29, 2017, at 2 pm at St. Johns Presbyterian Church, 5020 W Bellfort Blvd, Houston TX 77035.

Daniel De Leon, Principal of Sharpstown High School, was the featured speaker for the Bellaire/SW Houston Rotary Club.  Our club salutes his work in educating our youth and making a difference in their lives.  The new building looks beautiful!
Daniel De Leon and retired HISD Principal Judy Harwell share a few stories and laughs.  Bellaire/SW Houston Rotary Club is highly supportive and committed to education.
One of the many causes the Bellaire/SW Houston Rotary Club supports is the Wilburn Scholarship Foundation.  Scholarships were awarded at a ceremony held on May 11 at Prosperity Bank in Bellaire.  Please click below to see more pictures of the event.

Our club had a great time raising funds for all of the projects our foundation supports.  The event was held at the SW Campus of HCC.  The food was delicious and the music added to the atmosphere.  This was a family event and included a magician and face painter who helped entertain the children.  Ticket sales, the wine raffle, and silent auction all went to help fund all of the wonderful ways in which Rotary serves our world and our local community.  Thank you to all who came out and had a great time.  Click on below to see more pictures. Longtime Bellaire/Southwest Houston Rotarian, Patrick Lesley was honored with the Cliff Dochterman Award by the International Fellowship of Scouting Rotarians on November 17 at the club's luncheon meeting.  The award is named after past Rotary International President and Eagle Scout Cliff Dochterman.
The Bellaire/SW Houston Rotary Club was privileged to have Debbie Elder present her positive approach to educating our youth at our November 10 meeting.  There were several guests in the audience.  Additionally, the foundation was excited to present a check to Cherish the Children.  Thanks to Steve Magoon for the pictures.
We had a fantastic time at Andy Pollard's house for a Halloween party.  If you had any questions about whether Rotarians could have a good time, this night should have answered that question with a resounding yes.  There were appearances by Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, a 1920s gangster and his flapper girlfriend, Medusa, and Raggedy Ann and Andy.  Donations were accepted for End Polio Now which resulted in $1000 being raised in one evening.  Thank you to the Pollards for opening up your home to us and helping us End Polio Now.
The Buffalo Bayou runs through the heart of Houston and has many significant places along its banks.  Approximately 20 Rotarians and guests from the Bellaire/SW Houston Club took in the sights along the Bayou on Sunday, October 23.
Seniors at Com for Care Nursing Home were given a new TV for their recreation room by the Bellaire/SW Houston Rotary Club.  Judy Harwell, Don Beckner, Surpris Cherazard, and Steve Magoon delivered the flatscreen TV on October 20.  Rotarians always seek to serve.  This is a small gift that will hopefully benefit the seniors this facility serves for a long time. The New Member Orientation was a great success this quarter!  We were hosted at the home of our generous member Craig Wooten and his wife, Gayle.  The Orientation met in honor of our newest member Neil Silverman and his wife, Traci Silverman.  The theme was “What Makes You Think of Home” for our potluck dinner.  If you haven’t already spent some time getting to know Traci and Neil, you must definitely do that very soon.
Rotarians from the Bellaire/SW Houston Club visited Comfort Care Nursing Home to celebrate Grandparents Day on September 10.  Everyone enjoyed spending time with the residents and giving back to a generation that has given our country so much.
Bob Ellis is looking great.  He's pictured here hanging out with Rotarians from other clubs.  It's good to see Bob out and about.  When you see Bob give him a pat on the back and let him know how much you appreciate him.
Bellaire Southwest Houston was privileged to hear Denton Ragland, Executive Director of Evelyn's Park speak at the September 8 luncheon. The vision for the park continues to become a reality. Denton was enthusiastic about the progress that is being made, but even more excited about what is to come.
