The Rotary International theme for the year is to “Be A Gift To The World” and the District 7020 theme is “Success to Significance”. We have an ambitious set of goals given to us by our new Rotary International President Ravi and by District Governor Felix. We also have other goals that I have set for our Sunrise Directors to ensure we are serving the needs of our community. To be successful we need committed and engaged Rotarians who are willing to embrace the founding principles of Rotary, that of acquaintance and fellowship, and ensure that in everything we do there is an element of fun! If we do this together we can achieve great things.
This year, I challenge each of you to ask yourself what you want from Rotary and --based on your answer-- to achieve at least 12 touch points. The phrase “touch point” may be new to many of you and each Club has its own interpretation. In essence, it is a Rotary event that increases your participation over and above attendance at a weekly meeting. It can be participation in a service project, fundraising initiative or fellowship event. It can be attending a Rotary Conference or Rotary Leadership Institute course. There are so many opportunities out there. My hope is that by selecting activities of interest to you, you will share your talents and passions and be excited about the project and about Rotary. My goal --and that of the incoming leadership team-- is to provide you with the opportunities that will enable you to be engaged and have a fulfilling Rotary experience.
I look forward to working with each and every one of you to achieve a successful Rotary year, meeting personal, club, district and international Rotary goals which are successful and significant and which allow us to be a gift to the world.
Congratulations to Glen Trenouth, the 2015 winner of the Audi Q5 grand prize in the Rotary Sunrise Car Raffle. Glen's winning ticket was drawn at the Island Living Show this past Saturday. The car, valued at $55,750, was an attractive draw for the purchase of thousands of tickets. The proceeds from ticket sales are a major source of Rotary Sunrise funds for service in the Cayman community at around the world. A representative from KPMG was on hard to oversee the drawing.
The second prize, a $3,000 security system, was won by Pavlov Rameau. And third prize, $1,000 worth of Rubis fuel, was won by Roy McTaggart.
The 2015-2015 club officers and raffle organizers wish to express their deepest gratitude to every Rotarian and volunteer who played a role in selling tickets, promoting the raffle and supporting those who worked to make our biggest annual fundraiser a success.
Sunrise Rotarians gathered at Ristorante Pappagallo this past Friday (June 27) to mark the Changeover that celebrates the 2014-2015 accomplishments and welcomes the 2015-2016 leadership team.
IPP Kim Remizowski thanked the Club and its supporters for making his year memorable. After reviewing the Club's achievements and challenges, he awarded special honors to several members.
Paul Harris Fellowships were awarded to several members: Treasurer John Lee, Pauline McGettigan, Uli Ecke, PP Woody Foster, Lynne Whittaker, Rotaract PP Danielle Japal, and Rotaract President Matthew Seales.
Rotarian Jerrell Garner was awarded Rookie of the Year for 2014-15.
Vice President Gina McBryan was awarded Rotarian of the Year.
PP Andrea Bryan and Rotarian Lynne Whittaker were given special recognition for their years of service, dating back as Charter Members of the Club, as each announced their retirement from Club activities for the coming year.
The ceremonies concluded with President Christine Matthews being formally inducted by Assistant Governor Eric Bush. President Christine opened with special thanks to Dr. Sook Yin for introducing her to Rotary Sunrise. She finished by sharing a special send-off given to her each morning by her husband, "Lord" Matthews, "smile, have a good day, and make someone have a better day for having met you."
Except frogs. The days will not be better for having met frogs during President Christine's term, based on phobias and funny stories shared by a small but determined band of ranidaphobes!
Frogs notwithstanding, Sunrise Rotarians were urged to embrace this year's theme to "Be a Gift to the World."
The thoughts of every Rotarian and every friend of Rotary Sunrise go out to our friend and colleague whose family was traumatized by last Saturday's home invasion. It is only out of journalistic prudence and personal caution that we are not listing our friend's name here. He and his family know how deeply we appreciate his work and how much our hearts ache for what they have had to endure. On his behalf, we again urge anyone with any relevent thoughts or insight to contact RCIPS Detective Marcia Myles at 525-8303.
Rotary Sunrise will almost certainly recoup the small percentage of total raffle proceeds that were taken last weekend, either through capture of the crooks or pledges that have already been made by good people with Rotary connections. While three terrible people stole some innocence along with some cash, their deeds will be more than offset by Rotarians and friends who will continue to engage in wonderful works that raise funds, awareness and spirits.
Bad people have targeted non-profits and charities before and will do so again. We will examine our practices, but we will not let this incident deter us from helping others who face adversity, even when faced with some of our own.
Again, to our shaken but solid friend: we thank God your family is safe, and we thank you on behalf of a grateful club and community.

Changeover is celebrated as PP Winston Connolly takes the reins from PP Woody Foster.
The newsletter also marks Canada Day with a recipe for Canadian flag cookies, and closes with a joke which ends with the elderly Canadian couple quoting their country's national motto:
