The Cayman Islands Cancer Society’s Cancer Awareness Day Health Fair was a well attended event with several hundred people passing through the doors. There were speakers from local and international medical centres on a variety of topics and booths hosted by a number of different business entities.
Over 20 Sunrise Rotarians and Rotactors supported the event by operating the station where attendees could stop by and do an online cancer risk assessment tool. Additionally Sunriser, Dr. Richens (left), assisted with basic health screening including blood pressure checks and answering questions from members of the public. Dr. Ecke (lower left) was also on hand with his equipment to provide screening for head and neck issues, including cancer.
All told there was a minimum of 40 volunteers hours from the Sunrise team towards activities associated with the event.
Guest Speaker James Whittaker on Pier Cable Car Proposal
Last week’s presentation by Green Tech CEO James Whittaker is part of a continuing conversation about whether and how to build a new cruise ship pier in George Town that creates economic growth with minimal environmental impact. Mr. Whittaker’s idea is to have the ships anchor in the harbor and bring passengers to shore through a cable car system. He outlined specifications, costs and similar systems elsewhere.
The proposal, he says, would not require the large-scale dredging of the harbor that is included in current proposals being considered by Government. Mr. Whittaker estimates his proposal's price tag at around $170 million versus what he says will be a roughly $220 million cost of the current proposal once environmental mitigation steps are included.
Director Patrick has a copy of the presentation for anyone who would like to review the material.
Dictionary Distributions Wrap Up
Literacy Month distribution of illustrated dictionaries is wrapping up at schools, and Sunrise Rotarians have had a busy couple of weeks collecting smiles in exchange for the hundreds of reference books that have been passed out to the Year 5 students. At Sir John A. Cumber Primary School in West Bay, Principal Joseph Wallace and Minister Tara Rivers are joined by Literacy Director Su Mander, President Christine Matthews and Rotarian Faye Lippitt.
Minister Rivers hands out dictionaries at Sir John A. Cumber Primary School in West Bay.
MLA Roy McTaggart hands out dictionaries at Prospect Primary School.
Dear all: We have good news to share with everyone related to the our polio eradication efforts. Progress continues to be made!
On 21 September 2015, the Global Commission for the Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication (GCC) officially verified the worldwide eradication of wild poliovirus type 2 (WPV2). Convening in Bali, Indonesia, on 21 September 2015, the GCC verified the eradication of this strain after reviewing formal documentation submitted by Member States. The last detected WPV2 dates to October 1999, from Aligarh, northern India.
The announcement marks a major landmark in the global efforts to eradicate all three wild poliovirus serotypes: WPV1, WPV2 and WPV3. WPV3 has not been detected globally since November 2012 (in Nigeria); the only remaining endemic WPV1 strains are now restricted to Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Best regards,
Carol Pandak
