This timely and very important topic was the subject of todays presentation by Cathy Paroschy Harris and Amy Boucher of TBRHSC. Cathy is the Director of Prevention and Screening Services. She is pictured (right) along with Amy on the left, flanking President-elect Rod Morrison, former TBRHSC lead on Public Relations, who invited our guests and introduced them (Doug Shanks, not pictured thanked them).

The entertaining but very thoughtful, informative (and sobering) presentation started with a Cancer Prevention Quiz, and moved to the details of the major cancer forms that are a major focus of Cancer Care Ontario: namely Breast, Cervical and Colo-rectal. The epidemiology and basics of pathology were outlined, then the screening/prevention methods. Prostate and skin cancers (especially malignant melanoma) were also detailed.

www.MyCancerIQ.ca is the website promoted by the presenters (and Rod), for personalized action (planning).
www.tbrhsc.net/cancerscreening (1-800-461-7031) provides details regarding the mobile (bus) screening programme.

Absolute basics in day to day prevention were of course highlighted; including smoking cessation (incl avoiding 2nd hand smoke); activity off the couch daily;150 minutes minimum of heart pumping exercise per week; healthy food choices (1/2 a plate of veggies and fruits, plus a glass of water!!); and minimal alcohol intake.

Unfortunately the stats for cancer in this area are not favourable. Our guests work hard to mitigate this situation. Good luck carrying on, Cathy and Amy. This is a great hospital function.
