President Iain opened the meeting with a land acknowledgment and we sang O'Canada. Rotary Moment - How can one make a difference in Rotary? Tuesday Iain is speaking to Toastmasters about the topic: Making connections strengthens clubs. In short we meet people in our daily lives whether while shopping, going out for dinner or attending an event. Those conversations become the start of relationships. We are spending time at the next Volunteer Fair as an example. We will have many conversations with attendees interested in volunteering. Our Forest bags which create awareness and can start a conversation. That may be a reason to explain further what Charleswood Rotary does or create a volunteer opportunity for someone. Sarge Mike introduced one of our guest speakers fondly known as Mama Bear(Ashton). She works with the COACH program at Mulvey School. Peter Correia, Principle of Mulvey School was introduced later in the meeting. Jack Wilson spoke about Isadora Silva, our club's 2007 Brazilian inbound exchange student. She later returned to Winnipeg with husband Gabrielle and they now live in Charleswood with their 2 children. Gabrielle's parents, Wilson and Ana Valentini were attending tonight's meeting. Announcements Joanne, fellow Rotarian, Winnipeg Assiniboine - Does anyone have a contact for Joanne who is searching for accommodation for a Ukrainian family? Please contact Iain if you can help. Board Meeting: March 14th - We welcomed David Soper to the board meeting. It was noted that the club has considerable A/V gear stored at Breezy Bend that we are no longer using. It was suggested that the inventory be reviewed and excess equipment be disposed of. Glenn kindly has agreed to review the storage and recommend use or disposal. Ichelle - can someone volunteer to bring Ichelle (20 year old student from Nigeria) to our next meeting? Contact Iain. Vladimir Putin - Russian President Vladimir Putin has secured a fifth term in office through a dubious election process. For the benefit of all attending the meeting, Iain wished to make it clear his term ends in June and the chance of a fifth or second term are slim to none. Bridge of Hope Ukraine - Mandy reported that we are planning our next furniture drive for Saturday, March 23. There are only 5 volunteers registered so far. There are several ways to help. President Iain introduced Aston and Peter from Mulvey School. The COACH program is an intensive year-round community-based and academic program that provides emotional, behavioural and academic wraparound intervention and support for students and their families. The COACH program supports students who require additional support and resources to successfully attend school regularly. Through ongoing and individual student-specific planning for each child, there is positive change and success. COACH 1 involves students registered at Mulvey School and attend an off-campus site. It serves students from grades 1-6 with a focus on social emotional learning, regulation strategies and early years elementary intervention to promote academic success.
