Chair Announcements

President David has had an expression of interest from a friend who would like to establish a Rotaract Club at Red River College, where he works. President David will pursue this opportunity.

President David also noted that he is in the process of organizing the next board meeting, and confirming committee make-up.

There will be no meeting next week, August 4th, as it is Terry Fox Day.

This year’s Christmas Party will be held on December 15th.

• Caroline and Iain attended a marketplace event trying to sell a few unwanted items, and also promote the Assiniboine Forest.
• David S, was happy that Past President Iain brought his laptop and will handle the technical aspects of tonight’s virtual speaker.
• Cathy had an experience similar to the one Lloyd reported last week. (Lloyd had a squirrel in his kitchen.) A pigeon landed on Cathy’s balcony and spent the night. The happy part is that Cathy lives in a rental building, so instead of having to chase and catch the pigeon, she just called the building manager. A couple of hours later he arrived along with a cleaning person and a wildlife technician. The pigeon was safely taken away and the poopy balcony was cleaned.
• Lyle was sad last year because rabbits feasted on his garden. This year he is happy because a coyote appears to be feasting on the rabbits. And the garden is doing much better

With a little time to pass awaiting dinner, a few club members shared jokes and funny anecdotes.

Speaker 

Our speaker this evening was Peter Jollard, talking about VegePods. He joined us virtually from New Zealand. This is a project that places growing containers with schools, for food, but primarily for environmental education. The club will consider buying and placing VegePods with a school.

Next Meeting 

The venue has been changed to Past President Cathy’s Apartment Building, where we will meet in the Events Centre. Breezy Bend will be hosting the Manitoba Open that week and cannot accommodate us. We will hear from the recipients of this year’s Ed Werbowski scholarships.

Committee Announcements

Jim shared that profits from the GreenSpaces Golf Tournament go to support the Assiniboine Forest. He circulated a sign-up sheet for volunteers to do various tasks.

Ed Thompson passed around a recognition letter that we received from a school that we support in Guatemala.

Rod’s Ride for MS sheets are on the tables, or he can email you a link to donate online.

Jack Wilson shared that they had picked out an area in Assiniboine Forest to be the education area and are now putting in the woodchips.

Happy Bucks

• Dave Morris was very pleased that Myrna Driedger’s husband dropped off 100 beer cans to be traded in for cash for Polio Plus.
• Ed Toews was happy that his 1954 Fargo truck made it into a movie with John Travolta. Ed also had his picture taken with John Travolta.
• Ed Thompson had a fantastic time visiting three Folklorama pavilions.
• Rod enjoyed two weeks away when he travelled to BC to pick up a camper trailer.
• Cathy was pleased that our club’s support was mentioned in Epic Opportunity’s annual report.
• Iain drove to Saskatoon and had no problem finding places to charge his car. He also visited two Folklorama pavilions.
• Guest Larry Penner from Victoria, who visits Winnipeg about once a month, was happy that he is able to attend a Rotary meeting that includes dinner. And meets every week.
• Mandy was happy to have finished her Harvard course, travelled to the East Coast and to their cottage.
• Dory is happy that her dad is out of the hospital and doing better.
• Chuck was happy that the grandkids took all beer cans, wine bottles etc., collected while they were here back to Alberta, where there are refunds for all.
• Lloyd had been to four Folklorama pavilions. He was especially happy to have been to the Greek pavilion which helped prepare him for his trip to Greece.

Speaker

Nigel Jollands joined us virtually from his yacht where they are travelling the Northwest Passage.

I am delighted to introduce this evening’s speaker, Nigel Jollands.

I first crossed paths with Nigel quite by chance on the west coast of Scotland—a memorable encounter that has since led to this wonderful Rotary connection.

We can remember our meeting last year when the Novara and crew were in the Caribbean. This year they have travelled from there up the East Coast of the US, Canada around multiple ports in Greenland. Today they are on the move avoiding 40 knot winds in their current position at their most northerly point within the North West Passage as they prepare to transit through and onto their home country in New Zealand

The crew are Nigel and Veronica who are co-skippers, Maddy - chief engineer, Steve - ice pilot, Andy - engineer and Seagar navigator.

Please join me in giving a warm welcome to Nigel Jollands and crew.

There will be a gathering at The Forks on Thursday, October 21st from 5:30 - 7:30 pm.

It will be held near the Esplanade Riel footbridge with a workshop, Woven Relations Gardens.

• Ed Thompson was happy for the rain, which resulted in a good corn and canola harvest on his farm.
• Iain was happy about a trip to Saskatoon.
• Lloyd had a check up with his doctor who told him that there was nothing wrong with him.

After dinner we heard from the two of three scholarship recipients who were able to attend.

Koeun is planning to study life sciences at the University of Toronto. She is excited about meeting new people.

George is headed to the University of Manitoba to study engineering. He plans to study computer engineering and is especially interested in AI.

Request: Does anyone know where our club’s pop-up banner is hiding. We weren’t able to find if for this meeting, but it would be great to have it for the upcoming Volunteer Manitoba volunteer fairs.
