Duck Race 2021

September 25, at 2pm, we are dunkin' the ducks for our 19th Annual Duck Race!

Get your ducks and sponsor the race at www.nvsrotaryevents.org.

Yep, we are getting the gang together and putting on a Duck Race for charity, albeit in a slightly modified way. We will be racing the ducks and awarding $1500 in cash prizes, while raising money for our Blue Hills Technical High School Scholarship and to help with food scarcity in our communities.

The modification, for this year, is that we won't have our traditional on-shore activities. Hopefully, we can bring back the DJ, Bouncy House and Pony Rides in 2022.

In the meantime, check out our video from 2020!

Water project in Tanzania

Last night's vide shoot for our water project in Tanzania at Dedham Television with Jack Hoell and Mike Thorton from our club, and Richard Martorana, Bill Clunie, and Barbara Piper, from Engineers Without Borders.

The video will tell the story of our efforts to create a sustainable source of clean drinking water for one village. We take for granted our ability to walk to the kitchen sink and twist a faucet to get a clean safe drink of water.

Imagine having to drink from the same place that you do your laundry, take a bath and graze your animals. Imagine getting sick so that you can't work and your children getting sick so that they can't go to school. The citizens of this village don't have to imagine it. They live it every day.

Help us to help them, by making a donation or by joining our Rotary Club!

Why Am I Doing Something So Crazy?

I am raising funds for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) in honor of my father, Bill Powers, who was diagnosed with this rare blood cancer last spring. This past August he underwent an extreme treatment process in which he had to spend 28 days in isolation followed by months of at home treatment to avoid becoming sick with a weakened immune system. All along the way he main concern was for his wife (my mom) and our family. The entire treatment process he always had a smile on his face and the attitude that he “would be just fine.” I am certain that it is his positive attitude that has kept him moving.

Under the combined leadership of Dr. John Mulqueen and his wife Paul, a registered nurse, Forward in Health is dedicated to improving the health conditions and dignity of the people in and around Les Cayes, Haiti. Their vision is to make a long lasting impact on the health of the people who live in this area. To this end, they have undertaken the building of a health clinic in Fonde Fred, about twenty minutes from Les Cayes.

Others can donate as a non-Rotarian. Non-Rotarians can then choose to "help long-term disaster recovery efforts worldwide", then select the "Rotary Japan and Pacific Islands" fund.

KEVIN’S CAUSE – AN EVENING TO BENEFIT KEVIN MORRISON, AUGUST 12
TH
Fundraiser to help Norwood resident struggling with rare form of cancer

A fundraiser will be held for twenty-one year old Kevin Morrison of Norwood on Friday, August 12th. The fundraiser, Kevin’s Cause, will take place at Concannon’s at 60 Lenox Street in Norwood from 6:00 pm to midnight.  Families and others unable to attend that night can still participate by stopping by Concannon’s from 2:00 to 4:00 to enter their names for many great raffle prizes including a flat screen TV, and Sox, Bruins, and Patriot’s tickets.

Kevin Morrison, a 2008 graduate of Norwood High School and captain of both the football and hockey team in his senior year, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in February. He has been bravely battling the disease under the care of doctors at Dana Farber Cancer Institute. It has been determined that he would be better served by alternative treatments which are not available in the Boston area. Treatments up to this point have depleted the Morrison family’s finances and many of the coming treatments and associated costs are not covered by insurance. Your support will help Kevin as he continues to fight this disease.

The evening will include a DJ and auction and raffle prizes. Event tickets are $30 and can be purchased in advance at the Norwood Fire Department Local 1631 or Norwood Printing. Advance raffle tickets are also for sale at both locations.

To donate raffle or auction items, contact Allison Gemelli at ATG18@aol.com or (781) 640-2254. To make a cash donation, please visit nfdlocal1631.bbnow.org or send check to Kevin’s Cause, c/o Norwood Fire 1631, 135
Nahatan Street, Norwood, MA 02062. Checks can be made payable to Kevin’s Cause c/o Norwood Fire Local 1631. Norwood Fire Local 1631 is a recognized non-profit 501(c)3 organization.

A Thank You Note

WAY TO GO TEAM!

We wanted to send a quick thank you message as a resident of the neighborhood that has most recently benefited from the Rotary's generosity for the beautification of the West and Common Street island. I wanted to send a quick note of "snail mail" but unable to find an address, I am opting for this form of communication. Please extend our sincere appreciation to all rotary members
