President Don mentioned that the next Club meeting would be dedicated to finalising the Club’s Strategic Plan and completing a short list of local (Australian) and International community service projects for the Club to concentrate on during the upcoming Rotary year.
Don also mentioned that the Club Board had reviewed the Club’s operational structure of committees and determined that the majority of effort by members, is concentrated on community service projects and raising funds for those projects. As a result, it was decided that all members would by default be members of the Community Service Committee. This means that even members who have designated responsibilities e.g. Bulletin Editor, Treasurer, Public Relations etc. would also be required to participate in community service projects.
In future, all Club planning meetings would concentrate on the establishment, planning and conduct of projects and would involve all members present on the day. This would ensure that all of the skills and experience of all members would be available for projects and that everyone would be able to contribute should they wish to.
Don also had the pleasurable task of rewarding one of the Club’s most committed members involved in the planning and execution of fund raising during the current Rotary year. Rotarian Terry Rodoni was particularly active in organising and participating in many BBQs outside of retail outlets for electrical equipment, home handyman supplies and furniture, which raised many thousands of dollars for Club projects. Terry was of course, assisted by many of the members. However, the Board was satisfied that Terry demonstrated the Rotary ideal of service above self and accordingly awarded him a Sapphire to complement the Paul Harris Fellowship he had already earned.
Last week's speaker was Fiona Mort, Director Office for Women in South Australia. She gave a very informative presentation on “A Right to Safety”, a program sponsored by the South Australian Government to highlight the need for a change in society’s attitude towards women.
Fiona advised that according to a 2013 National Community Attitudes Survey, on average, one woman is killed every week as a result of intimate partner violence.
Also, since the age of 15:
1 in 3 Australian women had experienced physical violence
1 in 5 Australian women had experienced sexual violence
This has occurred mainly due to:
Gender inequality
Rigid adherence to gender roles
Attitudes, norms, behaviours and practices that support violence
Society and the legal system usually only react after violence occurs whereas the best long-term solution is to do more to prevent the violence from occurring in the first instance.
Fiona also raised the issue of the comments recently made on radio by Eddie McGuire and other sports personalities, which demean women, and as role models to many young men, promulgate that attitude towards women.
Fiona then showed a video clip, which very succinctly described the issue of violence against women and its impact not only on women but also on children in the family. It highlighted:
Most violence is carried out by men
It has a profound impact on children
Not all men are violent
If you see violence occurring, don’t hesitate to call the police
As a parent, be a positive role model concerning relationships with women
Men should examine their own attitudes and behaviours towards women
Call out sexist jokes against women
Interrupt anyone who, as the victim, is blaming themselves for the situation
Young people should look out for their peers who might be vulnerable
Women should be comfortable in speaking out against sexist or degrading remarks against women
Be a ‘friendly ear’ for any women sharing her experiences of violence
Women should report instances of domestic violence against themselves
Fiona asked that we support the Zahra Foundation which has been set up to provide support to women impacted by domestic violence and to promote changes in behaviour towards women, by men. The presentation by Fiona was a stark reminder of the issues of violence against women and the need for urgent action to prevent this growing trend from continuing.
