Our stories

This month, we recognize the importance of helping learners of all ages reach their full potential.

Rotary believes literacy is the foundation of learning, opportunity, and hope.

Our Sept.9th Club Meeting:

Our Guests This Week:  Kathleen Olson – District Governor, Maureen Boyd – Assistant District Governor, Marcela - RCPM inductee, Brian Comin – Port Moody Golden Spike Days, Rusty Johnson – “Rusty The Ribber”, and Sam Zacharias- Port Moody Police Dept.

DG Kathleen was delighted to induct our newest member, Marcela, to our Rotary Club.

Bringing an international perspective, natural curiosity, and a strong commitment to service, Marcela has a background in science, technology, leadership, and sales.

She is passionate about advancing practical, community-focused initiatives.  We look forward to the contributions she will make to our club and community. Welcome to our Rotary family Marcela!

Paul Harris Fellowship Recognition:

The Paul Harris Fellowship is one of Rotary's highest recognitions awarded to individuals who have made contributions to the Rotary Foundation or demonstrated outstanding notable community service to Rotary's mission - services supporting humanitarian, educational, and peace-building projects around the world.

This week, we were pleased to present the awards to:
  • Past President Alison Young with a Paul Harris Fellow +1 for her continued contributions to Rotary and community initiatives.
  • Rusty Johnson, whose longstanding support of Ribfest and award-winning barbecue team have been integral to the event's success.
  • Brian Comin, Director of the Port Moody Golden Spike Day Society, for his support of community events and the Tap & Go program.
  • Sam Zacharias of the Port Moody Police, recognized for the outstanding partnership and support he and his team provide at Ribfest and many other community events.

Our guest speaker this week, DG Kathleen:

We were pleased to welcome Kathleen Olson, Rotary District 5050 Governor and a member of the Rotary Club of Arlington.

  • Introduced District 5050's new Community Engagement Initiative, encouraging clubs to invest more resources directly into community impact projects
  • Emphasized the power of partnerships, both within Rotary and with community organizations, to amplify impact.
  • Shared inspiring stories from Rotary's work in Lesotho, demonstrating how collaboration can transform lives and communities.
  • Encouraged members to tell Rotary's story more often and more effectively so others understand Rotary's impact
  • Challenged clubs to invite more people into Rotary service projects and fellowship activities to strengthen engagement and membership growth.
  • Highlighted the importance of supporting The Rotary Foundation, noting that every contribution helps fund local and international projects.

Kathleen's message was simple and powerful: when we connect with purpose, invite others to join us, and work together, there is no limit to all the good Rotary can do.

A special thank you to Dan, who generously donated his winning bottle of wine to Marcela, our newest member!

Proof that you don't need a big crowd to make a big difference. Our Heritage Mountain Clean-Up team was out there, picking up litter, helping our planet,  and earning a few extra steps along the way!

A reminder to all club members to help keep our Rotary Little Book House at Old Orchard Park well stocked.

If you have gently used books to share, please consider dropping a few off during your next visit.

By keeping the shelves full, we help encourage reading, learning, and community connection for visitors of all ages.

Thank you for helping make this small but meaningful Rotary project a success!

This week’s meeting was a wonderful reminder of the power of community, generosity, and service

Our guests were: Marcela, Bruce, Brooke, Chris, and Ben & family.

Congratulations to our Ribfest 50/50 Grand Prize Winners! A local family took home an incredible $32,327.50!  The other half of the 50/50 fundraiser continues to support food security projects in our community through the Tri-City Rotary Clubs. What a true win-win for everyone!

Giving Back Locally and Globally, our club was proud to present several contributions supporting meaningful causes:
  • $25,011 donated to Camp Jubilee, helping provide life-changing camp experiences for children who may not otherwise have the opportunity.
  • $500 donated to Meadow Ridge Rotary-supported project in South Africa.
  • $500 contributed to the Amanda Todd Legacy, supporting students through educational opportunities.
  • $9,021.89  presented to Bruce, President of the Rotary Club of Coquitlam for their share of the proceeds from the Pop Hut at last month's Port Moody Rotary Ribfest.
  • $7,152.40 presented to Chris & Brooke, Rotary Club of Coquitlam in support of Santa Margarita School Project, an international education project in Uruguay who were also our guest speakers for this week’s talk.

One of our members summed up the impact of these donations perfectly: “Rotary is about doing good in our community and around the world,  and seeing the difference we can make when we work together.” beautifully said.

We  were delighted to welcome guest speakers and Past Presidents Chris and Brooke from the Rotary Coquitlam Lunch Club, who shared their passion for the Santa Margarita School Project.
  • The project will transform unused space into new classrooms and washroom facilities, creating safer and more supportive learning environments for children living in a community facing significant challenges.
  •  The school not only provides education, but also meals, family support, and opportunities that help young people build brighter futures.

Chris & Brooke, your presentation beautifully reflects Rotary values of compassion, education, inclusion, and service above self. We thank you for your team’s dedication and wish you every success as this project moves forward.

And Chris won the wine draw this week, proving that nothing brings Rotarians together quite like a fine beverage!

Thank you to everyone who continues to contribute their time, talents, and generosity.

Together, we are creating lasting impact, one project and one act of kindness at a time.
