New Accessible Playground Coming to Coney Island
Kenora, ON – The City is pleased to announce the upcoming development of a new, fully accessible Rotary Playground on Coney Island, with an anticipated opening in 2026. This project will replace the existing playground with modern, inclusive play structures that meet current accessibility standards, ensuring that children and families of all abilities can enjoy.
The project includes replacing outdated playground equipment, installing a durable and accessibility-friendly surface such as rubber matting, and creating an Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)-compliant play area. Throughout the process, the City’s Accessible Advisory Committee will collaborate closely to ensure accessibility remains a top priority at every stage.
“This new Coney Island – Kenora Rotary Club Playground is more than just a play space,” says Mayor Andrew Poirier. “It’s a step forward in making our parks inclusive and accessible to everyone, regardless of ability. It supports the City and council’s broader vision of creating healthy, engaging outdoor spaces that bring our community together. This is the fourth new playground in just five years, demonstrating council’s further commitment to fostering an inclusive and vibrant community for all residents.”
Funding for this project is made possible through the generous support of the Ministry of Employment and Social Development, Northern Ontario Heritage Fund
Corporation, and the Rotary Club of Kenora.
The City is proud to continue its strong partnership with the Kenora Rotary Club, whose ongoing commitment to fostering a healthy, vibrant community is demonstrated through their support of this and other collaborative initiatives.
John Dahl, Fundraising chair of the Rotary Club of Kenora, says, “The Rotary Club of Kenora has partnered with the City on several major projects, including the Rotary Splash Park and the Rotary Peace Park. We look forward to working together again on the Coney Island – Kenora Rotary Playground to enhance what Kenora has to offer for the children.”
Deb LeMaistre, Special Projects Chair at the Rotary Club of Kenora, adds, “The Rotary Club of Kenora is excited to partner with the City to build the Rotary Playground on Coney Island! Partnerships truly bring out the best in a community — combining skills, passion, and resources to create something meaningful for everyone. Creating an accessible playground means more children will be able to enjoy the space, regardless of their abilities. It’ll bring families together and makes Coney Island even more welcoming.”
Coney Island Park continues to serve as a vibrant hub for families, community activities, and outdoor gatherings. The new playground will further enhance this beloved space, supporting active lifestyles and strengthening community connections for residents and visitors alike.
Design concepts are underway in Fall 2025, with construction anticipated to begin in Spring 2026. The City looks forward to welcoming everyone to enjoy this exciting new inclusive space.
