World Polio Day
— October 19, 2026 — Rotary and Interact members in Kenora are taking bold action ahead of World Polio Day (Oct. 24) to support the global fight against polio—a preventable disease that still threatens children today.
Rotary members, friends of Rotary and Community members are invited to join the World Polio Day Fundraiser and Awareness Meeting on Monday, October 19, at 12:00 PM in the Rotary Room at the Kenora Recreation Centre. The event features interactive presentations, videos on global eradication efforts, and local fundraising initiatives, including "Purple Pinkie Day" and the sale of signature "End Polio Now" cookies from Lana’s Kitchen for $5.00 each.
When Rotary and its partners co-founded the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988, wild polio paralyzed 350,000 children annually across 125 countries. Today, cases are down by 99.9%, with wild poliovirus remaining endemic in only two countries: Afghanistan and Pakistan.
As long as polio exists anywhere, it remains a threat to children everywhere. Sustaining routine immunizations and getting vaccines to every child are critical to ending this paralyzing disease once and for all.
