6. Presentations : None.
7. Correspondence :
a. Shelter Box. Don McKay reported that he had heard back from Ally Buck, and she has advised that she is exploring the option of providing ShelterBox shelters through 3D printing for display purposes. Ally had recently seen these 3D models and says they are a great way to advertise/build awareness for ShelterBox activities. Ally can send us the graphics which illustrate the types of aid and shelter which ShelterBox deploys, or can also send the files from which we can have the 3D printed if we have access to such printing capabilities. Don will continue to communicate with Ally on this matter.
b. RoadRunner Swim Club. The Club has requested support for their involvement in Operation Rednose for the upcoming Christmas season. This was in the form of a letter, and Monica will advise that we will need them to complete the Funding Request Form. There was also some discussion about the fact that the Swim Club was assisting with ticket sales but has now declined to do so – was this part of the agreement to provide funding for their fundraising as well, or are we considering this without the reciprocal help. Doug mentioned that Jen from the Swim Club has actually been selling tickets, and also that some of the funds our Club had turned over to the Swim Club were not our own funds, but had been provided by another funder.
8. Committee Reports:
a. Catch The Big One will continue for another week, as the Ace of Spades is still hiding. Wayne and Lelsie Scott’s ticket was drawn, and they won $773 as the consolation prize.
9. Board of Directors Report: The Board had discussed the meeting room/lunch arrangement with Alan Gibb from the Wescana, and this will be discussed further under New Business (c).

b. “Movember” – Don McKay raised “Movember” and shared video information which are focusing on fund raising (and the related financial report) to address male mental health, suicide, testicular cancer and prostate cancer. Don will set up a team for fundraising in this way, and invite other Rotarians to join if they wish to do so. Don shared that he will shave his face by the next meeting, and the Club promised not to laugh! The links to the videos are:
c. Future meetings – Location: Don reported on the Rotary Board meeting held with Alan Gibb (Wescana Inn). Alan had shared that the current arrangement of providing lunch is not financially feasible any longer, and that the Rotary Club is welcome to continue holding meetings here, and that they would supply coffee/water, but that the room rental rate of $150/use would apply – and we can continue to use the audiovisual and storage areas where we have Rotary belongings now. The Club discussed this at length, and it was decided that we will gather information for various options and make a determination once that information is available. In the meantime, we will continue to meet at the Wescana. Crystal will check on details for the Rotary Room at the Museum, Don Dunnigan will check with UCN, and Don McKay will check with Kinsmen (eg. room and storage availability, accessibility, rental “rate”, etc.), and will check back with Alan on whether there is room for negotiation. If Members are aware of any other options, please share with the Club so that we can make a fully-informed decision. The Club also discussed the possibility of taking a break from meetings through a part of the summer, which would also decrease the cost of meeting rooms, but there was a concern raised that if there is a break, some Members may not return. The entire matter will be re-addressed when we have more information for consideration.
11. Unfinished Business :
a. Patronage booklet – This project will not be pursued at this time, and may be resurrected in the future.
b. Mural dedication – the date for this event is October 22/24 at 3:00 PM. Please arrive by 2:45 dressed in Rotary colours if possible. Don McKay will announce this again on the radio, and Monica will post this on the Rotary Facebook page as well. Monica will check in with Robin to see what he has discovered about the history of this mural (and others), and to confirm that he is willing to emcee the “event” since Kent will be away. Opasquia Times will attend to take photos, and we will submit an article to the paper.
c. Fish Fry 2024 – Once the final tally and notes are available, this will be shared with the Club, and we will discuss the 2025 event in a few months’ time to begin planning.
d. Lobster “Dinner” – Michael shared the information about costs ($27/lobster including freight, and Michael will work with Gardewine for free delivery) that he has received from his contact who supplies other Rotary Clubs with lobster. May have to look at $80, up from $70 – based on 1.5 per person). We will consider a “parking lot pick-up” lobster event for Spring 2025 – perhaps the parking lot next to the Wescana as there is plenty of room and road access. Michael will discuss the details of availability and pricing further with his contact when he sees him in Mexico this winter, and will share any new information with the Club.
e. UCN Linkages Feedback – The UCN representatives involved in the planning of the Linkages event were very happy with our Rotary assistance, and have asked us to put this on our calendars for next year as well.
f. Meals on Wheels in November - Monica has the list of approved Criminal/Vulnerable Persons Record Checks. Ken Kelly indicated that he can cover the one week available in November. Monica will send him the necessary forms and Rotary confirmation letter for him to arrange for the Checks through the RCMP.
g. Rotary Social Event. Michael asked about the Clearwater Hall for dates in November/December, but the Club has decided we would not hold another social event prior to Christmas and may consider an event for later in winter or the spring.
12. Club Banners:
a. Don McKay will let the Club know when there is additional information about the banners. Don is considering whether or not to wait until the Bill McDonald Memorial Basketball Tournament (December 13 and 14) and the Rotary Tea (December 1) events take place so that current pictures can also be added.
13. Exchange Student and RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) : No Report.
