6. Presentations : Connie Lucian shared the current plans for the Canada Day celebrations, specifically the parade, and also noted that she is seeking volunteers to assist with the preparations. She is also looking for various groups to commit to putting a float in the parade. The parade route will be from the arena and down 7th, and then around by the seniors’ home. Don Dunnigan volunteered to assist Connie. Kristi made the point that it is a tri-community and good for all to be involved, but also important to be mindful that Canada Day also holds history for some of our tri- community members. Connie can be reached at 204.620.5152 or connielucian@gmail.com. It was confirmed that Rotary will do the flag raising, and the cadets will also assist. Blair will be in early in July 1 to take the flag down and be prepared for the raising. The discussion turned to the fireworks display, and Ed Demchinski joined the meeting. He shared that he prepared a quote two months ago, but has not heard anything from the Town to know if funds will be allocated for the pyro-musical/fireworks display. The last show was about half an hour, and the cost was $22,500, so grants and donations are needed to make this happen. Ed does not charge for his time, the budget covers the purchase, and this is at a discount as he works for the distributors. He does need to know as soon as possible, as it takes considerable time to plan, prepare and order the fireworks. Doug Long also noted that Dylan Young is involved with this display, and may be assisting with fundraising. There is a Town Council meeting tonight, Connie Lucian and Kent Whaley will attend, as this issue is on the agenda, and will report back with any relevant information.
7. Correspondence :
a. Reminder regarding Fred Wright – Linked-In ad campaign email. Rotary International is seeking information from Rotary Clubs to raise the profile of Rotary around the world. He is looking for data on the various activities our Rotary members participate in through the year, with a list of those activities and the time volunteered as individuals and as a Club. Carol Buchberger will assist to gather this information and provide it back to the Club for submission to Fred.
b. Brazil Flood Response Fund email was shared with the Club and will be discussed later on the agenda.
8. Committee Reports:
a. CTBO – the winner today was Gary and Donna Kozun ($715), but the Ace of Spades is still hiding, so the game will continue. Peter noted the importance again of all Rotary members selling tickets, and it would be good to have some new faces sitting at the Grub Box, No Frills, etc.
9. Board of Directors Report: None.
10. New Business:
a. New Club Runner will be rolled out towards the end of this year. If there is
a desire to we can start access now by opting into the “Beta” test version.
If we choose to wait, it will happen when all clubs are rolled into the new
Platform. Members seemed more interested in working with the new system once it is in place.
b. Brazil Flood Response Fund donation. They are seeking contributions to assist. Individual members are asked to consider contributing, and Julia noted that our exchange student will be coming from Brazil so it would be good to support this need. Rick indicated that this was discussed at District Conference, and some of our Shelter Box contributions will be shared with Brazil. He also noted that the allocation of district-designated funds is up to the Governor and not individual clubs, but personal donations can be made from our Club. Blair noted that he will make sure to have a flag from Brazil when the exchange student arrives.
11. Unfinished Business:
a. Patronage coupon book. Don Dunnigan has spoken to a few businesses and there does seem to be interest in offering “deals” for a coupon book as a Rotary fundraiser. The books would cost $100. We would gear up in the fall and sell late November to December so it would be available for Christmas gifts. If CTBO is still going in the late fall/winter, we will have to decide if we want to go ahead and do this separate fundraiser at the same time.
b. MBCI Grad Breakfast June 27 - approximately 4:00 am - 6:00 am,
6 people to staff, Located at the Elks Hall – All of this has been confirmed, and reminders will be provided closer to the date.
c. Rotary Club of Winnipeg (downtown) - Hygiene Project for Cormorant. Our Club donated $500. Monica reported that the Rotary Winnipeg contact, Peter Imhof, felt that the delivery is to be taken care of within the community and Rotary assistance is not necessarily required. Monica will follow up with True North Aid, as they are leading this program, and Peter also indicated that a presentation from True North Aid can be made available so that our Club can learn more about this in the event we may be involved with other Northern deliveries in the future. Monica will arrange the presentation for our Club.
d. Summer clean up & BBQ May 25th. It starts at the Fire Hall at 10:00 AM.
Please wear something that displays the Rotary brand. Don McKay noted that the temperature is predicted to be 15o with a 60% chance of rain.
e. Meals on Wheels next week – Discussion occurred to be sure the schedule was covered for Meals on Wheels during the last week of May.
f. Cathy Lipscomb – The Pas Association for Human Development
CJAR Pledge Drive on Thursday will take place on June 13 & June 14. Our Club has offered to assist, and so we will need volunteers to take pledges at the radio station during the mornings, and at the Uptown Mall during the afternoons. There will be a poster provided to advertise this event one week before it takes place, and Cathy Lipscomb and Darryl Shotton will be available from “The Workplace” to share information on the radio during the Pledge-a-thon. The details which need to be addressed for the Pledge-a-Thon will be finalized at our June 11 meeting.
g. Fire evacuees – thank you to Kent W. who spearheaded the assistance of Rotary for providing a meal for evacuees during the recent fires.
h. The issue of the outstanding refurbished mural near the train tracks was raised. Doug Long indicated he would again be in touch with the artist and confirm a date for delivery. There was some concern that our Club has paid ½ the cost and this was to be ready prior to now. Kent reminded the Club that we had received a grant through the Destination Marketing Committee, so we will need to report back at some point on the status of this project.
12. Club Banners : No new information is available.
13. Exchange Student and RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) :
Need a host family for August for our Rotary exchange student coming from Brazil
14. Installation of New Members: None.
