8. Committee Reports:
a. Catch The Big One – Kent W. The draw today did not find the Ace of Spades, so on we go….with a new total winning pot of $47,831! Today’s winner was Ernie Neveux, and he won $1,240 with #12 which was the 5 of Clubs.
9. Board of Directors Report
a. Financial Assistance Application: The Tri-Community Baseball Association has been advised by Monica about the $1,500 contribution from the Rotary Club of The Pas which is to go toward the pitching machine, and that the cheque will be available once they confirm that they have the full funding necessary. The formal letter and the cheque will be prepared for presentation once confirmation is received from Kellie Graveline (or Chad Zolinkski) that they have sufficient funding for the project.
10. Unfinished Business:
a. Ag Society – Rodeo 2026. Financial Assistance Application has been received and will be discussed by the Board on May 19.
b. Rotary lobster pots – Peter and Michael will arrange removal of the pots from the Legion. Peter has not had confirmation from Jim Berschied, and a few other options were discussed such as donating to one of the other organizations or food kitchen, but the required outlet size may be an issue. There may be organizations in Winnipeg who can use them (eg. Agape, etc.). Rick also mentioned that he raised this at District Conference and there was no interest, although John Coulson (now with the Dauphin Club) was going to check with that Club as well. Another option discussed is to advertise to see if there is any interest – locally and outside of the community (eg. other Clubs). It was agreed that we would post the information about availability of commercial soup pots on Facebook and check interest there.
c. Meals on Wheels. The calendar for May is not yet filled – please consider volunteering to deliver Meals on Wheels in May. Even one or two days can be a big help!
The issue was raised that if we are having difficulty filling the calendar for the “Rotary month”, maybe it is time to advise Brian Duncalfe (Coordinator) that our Club cannot commit to cover the calendar in November. Brian will be advised that Rotary will not be available to cover full months in the future. Monica indicated that she is still interested in delivering Meals on Wheels when available, and other Rotarians indicated this as well, so Brian will be advised of this.
d. Trade Show. Monica had received information from Donna Dawe that a cheque was ready for our Rotary Club help at the Trade Show, and invited Donna to come to the meeting. Donna presented Julia with a cheque for $1,588 for our assistance with the entry door.
11. New Business – a. Wednesday Morning Radio Spot: Kent will do the radio spot on May 13, and if further dates need to be covered, this will be addressed at the May 19 meeting.
b. Tri-Community Foundation. Further discussion will take place when the time arises next year in terms of the relevant residuals available from the portion of the Fund set aside for Rotary.
c. New Request for Funding. Michael O’Rourke brought forward a request for funding from Kurukulosooriya Perrera, a new mother who moved here from Sri Lanka with her husband. The family was advised during her pregnancy that she was diagnosed with cancer and now needs to travel to Winnipeg after surgery for treatments for 6 weeks. The request is for $1,000 to cover some travel and related expenses to stay in Winnipeg during this time.
Motion: John Pearson/Don Murphy: That the Rotary Club of The Pas contribute $1,000 to the Perrera family for their medical travel costs. Approved.
d. District Conference Report. Rick Hubbs shared information from his attendance at District Conference. There was discussion about membership ideas and the Global On-line Club (currently the Rhodesian Club serves as President). Mark Chipman was the keynote speaker and spoke about the funding which is going towards sports in Winnipeg – there are many good things happening in making Winnipeg central in the sports world. There was a talk from a polio survivor as well. On the social side, there was great music and also dancers (Indigenous, Ukrainian, Irish and Phillipino) and good visiting around the dinner tables. A number of awards were presented through the dinner as well, and there was a skit (a spoof on Canadian hockey) presented in English by 6 International Exchange Students.
e. Canada Day. Kent shared that there is a meeting this evening for Canada Day planning. Kent will check for confirmation in relation to the cost and timing for a fireworks display, and it is likely to be 11 PM on July 1 as Ed D. is booked for another display for the night of June 30. Kent is willing to assist again with the gathering of funds for the display, and requested if Rotary would contribute again this year.
Motion: Don Murphy/Linda Northcott: That the Rotary Club of The Pas contribute $2,000 towards a July 1, 2026 fireworks display.
Approved.
f. Sea-Can “Work Bee”. The Rotary storage sea-can needs to be cleaned out and decisions made as to what to do with some of the items currently stored there which we may not need in the future, and are just taking up space.
It was agreed that on June 2 after the Rotary meeting (1 pm), those interested and available to assist with the “work bee” will go to the sea-can to help out. If Robin is available, he will also be there with his trailer in order to move items or discard them, depending on what decisions are made.
12. Exchange Student. No update at this time.
13. Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA): No update at this time.
14. Installation of New Members. None.
15. Rotary Club of The Pas 100th Anniversary (Permanent Agenda Item): Kent, Don D., Don Mc, Val, Monica, Kristi
16. Sargent at Arms next week: Ken Kelly
17. June 12: Dinner at Clearwater Lake Hall, DG Wayne Jacobsen and his wife will be attending. Spouses and children are invited. A sign-up sheet was shared at the meeting and a number of Members signed up. Monica will send the sign-up sheet to the entire Club to ensure everyone is invited. We will also include Bocce Ball if there is enough interest.
Members are asked to send any nominations for consideration of the Paul Harris Award to Rick – all supporting documentation must be provided with the nomination.
18. Four-Way Test:
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
Financial Notes:
1. $6,000 Cheque (from the various Rotary funds as previously agreed) will be needed once confirmation is received from the family (Kim Kennedy) that they have the full funding available for the accessible bed for their daughter.
