March 24 2014 Rotary Meeting Bulletin

The meeting was opened by our President Darcy Mykytyshyn.

Our Sarge for the day was Glen LaBuc.

Guests of Rotary included:  Hannah Kemp, Blaire Biggs, Naomi Akkermanns, Luke Radau, Wanda Radau, Shawna Dawson, Steven Johnston

Visiting Rotarians included: Judy Ann Wybenga, Ray McBeth, Ray Miller, Jim MacSween  

Happy/Sad Bucks included:  Happy Bucks from Ken Johnston for his return to Rotary after a three-month hiatus.  Phil Maczuga had happy dollars for a great weekend at outbound orientation with outbound student Shawna Dawson.  He also mentioned Victoria Debonnet (our inbound student) has her parents visiting in town.  He has also sold his house and will be leaving for Manitoba at the end of June.  Robert Mast had happy bucks for selling his half of his practice, but says his retirement is a long time off.  Gloria Beck had some bucks to tell the Club that the historic Pine Lake Church had suffered a great deal of vandalism, but the culprits have been caught.  There were happy bucks to have members of area 4H clubs visiting today.  There were also bucks to suggest that Rotarians nominate one of their colleagues for the upcoming Women of Excellence Awards.  Judy Ann Wybenga had announcement bucks for the Sunrise Rotary's Second Annual Virtual Auction.  Gail Surkan had what she called "fluffy bucks" to acknowledge she is home briefly from Mexico and is on her way back again.  Jim MacSween had bucks to mark the passing of three members of the legal community.  Morris Flewwelling had bucks to say he and Hazel attended the Didsbury-Carstairs Club night.  He also noted a newspaper article on a former Young Citizen of the Year, Meagan McLavish. Grace Zhang had announcement dollars to remind people to donate to the wine tree for the Citizen of the Year Gala.

The Sarge then stumped everyone with questions about apples.  

50-50:  Shawna Dawson had the winning ticket, and pulled the lucky Joker to win $120.  Well done Shawna!

Our guest speakers were  Hannah Kemp, Blaire Biggs, Naomi Akkermans, and Luke Radau who spoke about the benefits of belonging to 4-H and what 4-H does for our community. They also let us know about the upcoming Red Deer and District 4-H Beef Show and Sale June 1 and June 2 at the Red Deer Westerner Agri Center.  Thanks very much!

Announcements:  Darcy reminded us of the upcoming dinner with Rotary International President Ron Burton on May 2nd.  Tickets are available online only.  Also remember that the Citizen of the Year Gala will be May 9th.  The goal is to have 500-600 guests. 

Next meeting:  March 31 2014 12 PM, Quality Inn North Hill There will be a new member induction ceremony and Paul Harris Fellow day.   
Rotary Meeting Bulletin for March 17th, 2014
 
Today's meeting was called to order by President Darcy Mykytyshyn.
 
Our inbound student Victoria gave us an update.  She joined the badminton team at her school.  Over the weekend she went to see Les Mis at Hunting Hills High School, helped out with the 50
-50 tickets at the Rebels game, and also watched a hockey game.  
 
Janice Wing was our Sarge for the meeting.
 
Guests of Rotary were Michelle Sluchinski, Jennifer Clark, Maurice Russel, Kevin Erickson, Hazel Carson, and Grant Johnson.
 
Visiting Rotarians:  Victoria (In-bound student), Wayne Miller
 
Happy/Sad Bucks included:  Janice Wing with bucks for being so busy on Mondays with the organization of the RDC Athletics Breakfast, Marty Skinner had reminder bucks for Citizen of the Year 
Gala tickets, get yours at the back of the room after the meeting. Parkland Fuel will sponsor the speaker for this year's gala.  Bill McTaggart had some advertising bucks for tickets for a 
trip to Tuscany sponsored by Peter and Kathy Lacey to benefit Camp Alexo to the tune of $50K.  Tickets are $100 each.  Morris Flewwelling had announcement bucks to tell everyone "Red Deer 
is Ready" for the 2019 Canada Winter Games, share the word, and wear your pins.  Grace Zhang had announcement dollars that it's time to contribute a bottle of wine or make a donation 
towards the Citizen of the Year wine tree.  They'd like to collect about 40 bottles.  Dr. Robert Lampard had happy buck for two months in the Mexican sun and some family birthdays.  Robert 
Mast had announcement bucks for a Wednesday, March 26th fundraiser featuring Canadian Tenor Ben Heppner.  Tickets are still available and there will be a champagne and dessert reception.  
Craig MacKenzie had a happy buck to bring Hazel Carson to the meeting on her 85th birthday, and we sang Happy Birthday to her.  
 
50-50:  Maurice Russell had the lucky ticket, but didn't choose the lucky card. 
 
The Sarge then fined anyone not wearing green for St. Patrick's Day, and anyone who missed a 50 50 shift.  
 
Our Guest Speakers were Michelle Sluchinski and Jennifer Clark of Aspire Special Needs Resource Centre.  Michelle spoke about fund development, and how the $7500 from Rotary is put to 
fabulous use.  Thank you so much Michelle for your presentation!
 
Darcy reminded everyone of Rotary International President Ron Burton's visit to Red Deer on May 2nd (tickets are available online), as well as the Citizen of the Year Gala on May 9th.

Happy/Sad Bucks:  There were happy bucks for a week in Mexico and the weekend's Bowl for Kids.  There were 65 teams and a great effort.  Dianne McDonell had news that our exchange student from Brazil 12 yrs ago, Klara is going to visit with her husband.  Rotarian Harold Barnes will be in the Red Deer Advocate this week talking about living at the Michener Centre.  Marty Skinner had happy announcement bucks that our guest speaker for the upcoming Citizen of the Year Gala will be Olympian Hayley Wickenheiser.  Our goal is to have 500 guests this year.  It will be a sit down dinner, $125 per ticket.  Jamie Jaques had announcement bucks for ATCOs 20th anniversary, and he will also have the Rebels Playoff 50-50 schedule ready soon, if necessary.  Jeffrey Dawson had happy bucks to thank Rotary for sending his daughter Shawna to be the Club's outbound student this year.

Our Sarge had some Oscar talk and fined everyone in the room who is not an engineer. (It's National Engineering and Engineering Science Month)
 
Victoria Debonnet gave an update.  She has moved to a new host home with Shelley Ralston.
 
Phil Maczuga introduced our outbound student Shawna Dawson.  She is going to Germany.  She is currently a student at Lindsay Thurber.  When she returns she would like to study engineering.  She has a love of math and science, particularly physics.  And, she loves learning languages.
 
Dick McDonell gave an update on the Rotary Scholarship Fund.
 
Our Vocational Speaker was Peter Clemens, thanks Peter!  Welcome to your Rotary Club.  Peter works for HBC and is the force behind theChangeblog.com
 
Darcy reminded the Club that on May 2nd, 2014 Rotary International President Ron Burton will be in town.  Two or three volunteers are needed to help with ticket sales, please see Darcy.  The Citizen of the Year event will be held May 9th.  Next week's meeting will be a business meeting to discuss our strategic plan.

Rotary Notes for February 12th 2014
 
Today's meeting was held at the RDC Cenovus Learning Commons
 
President Darcy Mykytyshyn greeted a great crowd and also special speaker Dr. Warren Jestin.
 
Our Sarge at Arms was Glen LaBuc, who tried his best at 'economist' jokes.
 
There were too many guests and visiting Rotarians to list, and Rotarians at each table introduced their guests individually.  It took quite a while because there were so many.  A good welcome to all!
 
The Sarge then fined anyone who didn't bring a guest, and tried a few more 'economist' jokes.
 
Happy/Sad Bucks  Gerry Winia had sad bucks for the passing of his mother-in-law, Chuck Robertson had happy bucks for his son winning against the Blackfalds Wranglers, Bre Fitzpatrick had five proud bucks for the Rotoracter's successful Mix and Mingle, Dawna Allard had money for all the medals so far won by Canadians at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Janet Wilson also celebrated the Canadian Women's Hockey Team's Olympic successes so far.  Elizabeth George brought greetings from Lacombe, Glenn Moore celebrated his aunt's 100th birthday, Shelley Gagnon had proud dollars for touring the 2019 Canada Winter Games Technical group through Red Deer.  Robert Mast had happy bucks for the great job Central Alberta athletes did last weekend at the Alberta Winter Games.
 
There was no 50-50 draw today.
 
Joel Ward introduced our guest speaker, Scotiabank Vice President and Chief Economist Dr. Warren Jestin.  Dr. Jestin gave an informative address about economic issues happening globally and closer to home here in Alberta.  He says "Growth is Best in the West" and spoke of a positive economy for Alberta in the long-term.  Thank you, Dr. Jestin.
 
Our President offered thanks to Brian Jannet of Scotiabank, his colleagues at RDC and the members of the Rotary Club board for helping make today's special day possible.

Rotary Club Meeting Minutes for February 24 2014
Our meeting was opened by President Darcy Mykytyshyn
 
Inbound student Victoria Debonnet gave us an update of her activities which included a trip to Calgary with other exchange students to see a hockey game.  She also saw the Calgary Tower.  Victoria will be leaving her current host family (Ian Warwick) and moving to her new host family (Shelley Ralston)
 
Shelley Ralston was our Sarge for the day and she was quite lenient on fines. - whew!
 
Guests of Rotary were Victoria Debonnet and Misook Yoo.
 
Visiting Rotarians:  Brian Walton from Calgary South. 
 
Happy/Sad Bucks included:  Lyn Paradis had some announcement bucks for the upcoming Women in Rotary event happening Saturday March 1st.  Lyn also left Literacy Alive information pamphlets on every table. Graham Schofield had reminder bucks of the upcoming Citizen of the Year event on Friday May 9th.  Dan Hachey had announcement dollars to say next year he intends to spend two months outside the polar vortex and in warmer climes.  There were happy acknowledgement bucks from Bill Hull for the substantial help given by Stantec and Russ Vlad to the CNIB in Red Deer.  Over the past five years they have raised over $350,000 and created a lot of awareness.  Dianne McDonell had happy bucks for last week's collaboration to present Dr. Warren Jestin at RDC.  Craig Mackenzie had happy bucks for all of Canada's Olympic medals.  Shelley Ralston had a buck to say we need a Sarge or a "Sarge in Training" for next week's meeting. 
 
The Sarge reminded everyone that March 8th is International Women's Day and had some stats on the role of women in the Olympics over the year.  She also highlighted current highschool and post-secondary graduation rates in Alberta.
 
Victoria had the lucky 50-50, and with some prodding from the Sarge, picked the lucky joker!
 
We sang Happy Birthday to Rotarians with February birthdays, and also to the forgotton December Birthday people. 
 
Robert MitchellOur guest speaker was Robert Mitchell, CEO of the United Way of Central Alberta, and fellow Rotarian.  Robert gave us an update on how the United Way is changing to meet the needs of Central Alberta, and how they now consider funding partnerships and collaborations.  He also spoke of the need to bring 211 service to Red Deer and area.  An online service is expected in May, and if funding becomes available, full 211 service could happen with the year. 
 
He ended with the great news that with some recent donations, the United Way of Central Alberta was able to reach its 2013 goal of $2.25 million dollars!   Thanks Robert for a great presentation.
