World Polio Day Continues to Grow
Participation in this year’s World Polio Day live-streamed event continued the growth registered since it began in 2014. Rotary, the world’s leading advocacy organization on polio eradication, held this year’s program on 24 October at the headquarters of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The event brought some of the biggest names in the campaign together to highlight the progress that has been made and to discuss what further action is needed to end the disease for good. |
Growing a Future in Cape Town
On a drive along the N2 Freeway in Cape Town, South Africa, travelers speed past endless clusters of corrugated metal shacks that fill the sandy Cape Flats area between the airport and iconic Table Mountain. “I grew up in this area,” says Lloyd Whitfield, a retired dairy products company owner and member of the Rotary Club of Constantia, pointing out where his family once owned land. “There was just bush. I used to ride horses, and we used to shoot game in this area – there was nothing.” Now, more than a million people are crowded here, the townships established when black residents were forcibly relocated out of “white areas” during the apartheid years. More recently, the townships are the destination for hundreds of thousands of migrants seeking to benefit from Cape Town’s growing economy. But the rate of migration has outpaced job growth. |
What's Next for Rotary?
Demographic change is a drama in slow motion. It unfolds incrementally, tick by tock, but it transforms societies in fundamental ways – and the America of the early 21st century is undergoing two such dramas at the same time. Our population is en route to becoming majority nonwhite at the same time a record share of us (like me) is going gray. Either trend by itself would be the dominant demographic story of its era. The fact that they’re unfolding simultaneously has created giant generation gaps. The United States is at a moment in its history when young and old don’t look alike, think alike, vote alike, or use technology alike. |
Elect to be Civil
A couple of years ago, researchers at Princeton and Stanford released a study of American political attitudes that was, in a word, terrifying. The most shocking finding was that political prejudice is now more acute than racial bigotry. What’s more, it is voters who are driving the cycle of contempt and confrontation in Washington. Those intractable politicians we love to rant about are, in fact, acting on our orders. Another study, by political scientists Alan Abramowitz and Steven Webster at Emory University, offers more grim news. Americans are increasingly engaging in a practice they call “negative partisanship,” which means we vote based more on fear and loathing for the other party than on a positive identification with our own. These negative views, by the way, are not grounded in a sophisticated objection to the policies advocated by the opposing party. They are tribal in nature. |

Some Rotarians have reported receiving a scam email asking them to click a link to update names and contact information in a directory. The email, which stems from a gmail account, is not from Rotary. |
Rotary Foundation Named World's Outstanding Foundation for 2016
The Association of Fundraising Professionals has recognized The Rotary Foundation with its annual Award for Outstanding Foundation. The award honors organizations that show philanthropic commitment and leadership through financial support, innovation, encouragement of others, and involvement in public affairs. Some of the boldest names in American giving — Kellogg, Komen, and MacArthur, among others —are past honorees. |
Healing without Borders
Hundreds of people gather in an open-air courtyard at University Central Hospital in Kigali, Rwanda. Men in suits, women in flowered dresses, even prisoners in pink and orange gowns are waiting to find out if they will receive medical care. Some have no visible signs of injury. Others arrived on crutches, with arms in slings, or with catheters protruding from their clothing. Several have swollen, broken limbs: injuries that should have been mended long ago but were neglected because of the country’s long surgical-ward backlog, or simply poverty.

Green Town Rotary Partners with Fire Department
The Green Town Rotary Club has joined forces with our local fire department to ensure that all local households, regardless of income, are protected from the dangers of carbon monoxide. Fire chief Guy Montag said the club's purchase of about 150 carbon monoxide detectors would almost certainly save lives in our community. The detectors are available for free pickup at the central fire hall on Gernsback Street while supplies last.

Reversing the Recruitment Chill
As February 1905 drew to a close, the city of Chicago emerged from almost a month of unusually cold weather. The mercury failed to rise above freezing for 28 days, a record for continuous cold the likes of which hadn’t been seen in years.
