Micheline Payne, Suicide Prevention Co-ordinator at Canadian Mental Health Association let the Club know that Medicine Hat is a highrisk area for suicide; 105 people died by suicide in our area in 2010 as compared to 103 in Calgary during the same time frame.  4/5 deaths by suicide involve males between the ages of 35 and 60.
Most common means of suicide is through guns or hanging. Suicide is 100% preventable. Signs of suicidal risk include depression (may be demonstrated as anger, irritability or hostility), risk-taking behaviours (increased alcohol/drug use, etc), or avoidance behaviour. If someone you know or love appears suicidal, listen, ask whether the person is thinking of harming/killing himself, tell someone who can help & don’t make promises you can’t keep. For more info/office presentations, call Micheline @ 504-1811.
