Words of Wisdom
Sharla's program was on office ergonomics and back care for backpack carriers. She began the program by letting us know that although improper use of backpack's is resulting in many problems for youngsters, it does keep her and April in business!
Some pointers she had for backpack use:
-
Don't carry your backpack over one shoulder no matter how cool it looks.
-
Purchase the correct size backpack for your children.
-
The backpack should ride on the lower back with heavy items close to the spine, and the shoulder straps should be snug.
-
The backpack should not weigh more that 15% of the carrier's body weight. Glen stated that he didn't think they made backpacks that big!
-
Reflecting materials should be somewhere on the backpack.
The next session began with "The more you sit, the sooner you will die". On that cheery note for all of us sit down office workers.Sharla said that we need to get moving! Get up and walk every chance you get. Posture at the computer is very important and if you feel any numbness anywhere, address it, don't ignore it. Continued laptop use is an ergonomic disaster. Sharla then got us all involved with some stretching exercises, which felt great! She also said to visit a therapist as well if any problems persist.
Meeting Minutes:
President Gord continued the meeting and advised us that there were $91,000 in district grant available. Our club would be eligible for at $2000.00 non-matching grant, or a $5000.00 matching grant. One grant per club maximum may be granted. Glen Christensen was thanked for volunteering his time to sit on the District Grant Committee. If any committees are interested in applying, the initial proposals must be in by August 31st to Gord.

Inductions for new members Murray Jaster and Les Scholly will be in early September.
