Teach a Mother, Change the World
Gem and Dr. Tanyss Munro presented today about their experiences teaching in Bangladesh. Gem is a writer and artist who has also spent many decades working to improve opportunities for disadvantaged people across Canada and abroad. Together with Dr. Tanyss Munro, they are devoted themselves to improving educational opportunities for marginalized communities and people across Canada and abroad.
Currently, and for the last 6 years, they are teaching in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
They have founded the Amarok Society, a registered Canadian charity that provides education programs to the extremely poor in Bangladesh. They teach women/mothers courses in English (the language of trade) and their native language, nutrition, reproductive health, math and science. The stipulation for enrollment in their program, is that each mother must teach 5 other people (children or other adults) what they learn. They have had significant successes in that enrollment in their programs is high, and the men in the community are now accepting and even bragging about on occasion, the education of the women. They have partnered with the Belleville, ON Rotary club as well as a Rotary Club in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Their goal is to raise awareness and funds to continue their work in Bangladesh, and help give education to 70 million of the poorest people in the world.
