November 10th - A Visit from McMan
Meeting Date: November 10, 2009
Program: Chris Christie, McMan Youth, Family and Community Service Association, Southeast Region
Cashier: April Ruzycki
Greeter/Recorder: Jace Anderson
The first was an update on Winter's Inn
- Last year Winter's Inn served 99 unique guests - over 800 intakes averaging 5-6 per night
- 8 of 12 ongoing chronic homeless in MH are now housed in Housing First program
- McMan searching for new location for Winter's Inn has posed a challenge "Not as easy as we thought it would be to find a location"
- City Municipal Planning Commission (MPC) gave conditional approval for proposed Winter's Inn location, partly based on McMan focusing on a 'good neighbor campaign'
- Since that time, a Law firm has served McMan with a letter from adjacent business appealing City approvals
- Chris feels that a lot of the opposition is not based on fact or experience & McMan is very frustrated about this situation
- MPC review meeting to take place Thursday at 2:30 pm
- McMan has no other location options at present
- Chris hopes that rather than NIMBY McMan would find YIMBY (Yes, In My Back Yard) at the MPC meeting
The second was a brief update on the Detox Centre Project
- Chris also reports that Detox Centre study report will be presented to Corporate Services committee at City Hall
- Detox Centre models are based on evidence based treatment plans
- 8,000 sq ft required to operate 6 - 12 bed facility
- Chris stated that 'it can not be sustained without support from Alberta Health Services'
