Our speakers provided a review of the activities offered by the Medicine Hat Youth Society with a focus on this past summer’s events.  The Society offers programs year round for youth 11-17 years of age from their location in downtown Medicine Hat.  Their focus is on social/recreational opportunities and providing activities designed to develop social and life skills for the participants.

This past summer saw over 600 participants take part in the activities offered.  The emphasis was on getting the youth engaged both in the community and with each other.  As evidenced by their AV presentation this did seem to be achieved.  At the Centre itself there were an average of 15 youth daily taking part in the activities, in the winter this increased to 18.  The Centre is open to all youth within the target age group.

Funding for the Youth Society is achieved through donations and community support.  Some of the activities generate a small amount of revenue which is reinvested in the programs.

Meeting Notes:

  • President Jace provided some updates on upcoming events.  Viva Las Vegas still needs your support and tickets are expected to be available soon.
  • The Rotary Leadership Institute will be offering a day-long session in Medicine Hat on October 1st.  This is your opportunity to develop your personal leadership skills which will benefit you both in your career and community development.  The Board will consider sponsorship for anyone wishing to attend.
  • The Draw was for $768 (it continues to grow!!!)  Lucky Larry Johnson had the ticket but for two weeks in a row couldn’t find the Ace.  Maybe next week Larry!! There are only 11 cards left so the odds are pretty good, don’t miss out.

Next week’s presentation will be from Carol Ann Cross-Roen from the Medicine Hat Library speaking on the Sunrise Rotary Ride the Road to Reading Program.
